Storyline

Still missing Jack the team reopens the disappearance five years earlier of PE teacher Jason Bowe when human remains are found at Peregrine Manor school, where he taught. Of the staff only support worker Helen Hanley is helpful.Stuffy Latin teacher Archie Millgrow argued with Jason about his over-familiarity with pupils whilst former student Eleanor, now the school secretary, and sports jock Oliver believed Jason was having an affair with pupil Melissa. Brian is more concerned that, despite falling intake numbers, school finances are surprisingly healthy and suspects Jason stumbled upon a plot by which wealthy donors subsidised the school in return for favours from old boy Geoffrey Parks,MP,Melissa's father. Then one of the suspects makes a confession but the team is not convinced and believes they are covering for someone else. Written by don @ minifie-1

Life after Jack
4 September 2012 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

After last week's Victorian mystery the team are back investigating a modern mystery. A body is unearthed on the grounds of a public school and it is assumed to belong to the PE teacher who disappeared just before the end of term several years previously. As the team investigate the school they discover many secrets; a teacher who has been stealing little items from staff and pupils alike; blackmail for more than one reason and a couple more deaths. One thing is certain; by the time is closed more than one person will have been arrested and the school is unlikely to be quite as prestigious as it was. Away from the case Sandra has yet to find a replacement for Jack and Brian is still the only one to know the real reason for his departure.

This was a decent episode but James Bolams's presence as Jack is certainly missed; I hope they can find a replacement for is as interesting without trying to be the same. The mystery itself was entertaining, if rather routine; it seems de rigueur that a detective series must have an episode set in a public school… that said being familiar didn't make it boring. It helped having guest stars that included the reliable Nicola Walker and Susannah Harker, it was also good to see Susan Jameson return as Brian's wife Esther; she only had a small role but their scenes together are always fun.
