Horrible disappointment from the director of The Strangers
This movie flew under the radar for two years as it sat on the shelf waiting to be released. It is weird to see this movie lying in wait with the director being Bryan Bertino who directed The Strangers which was a modest hit and produced by mega horror studio Blumhouse. After seeing this, I can understand why it was delayed. It is a movie with a promising premise, but it is dragged down by predictable scares, dumb characters, and a horrible ending.
Good: I will say some moments in the movie were genuinely creepy. There is some nice atmosphere thrown in here with a creepy clown theme running through the movie.
Bad: The movie is just a mess. All the elaborate mechanisms in this setup doesn't make any sense given the scope and how they incorporate the cameras leads to more implausible questions. Then there are the characters that just do really stupid decisions because if they acted somewhat logically then this movie would have never existed. Then there's the ending reveal that completely ruins everything built up making the entire setup of the movie fall apart and it just lacks any impact.
Overall, it is a terrible found footage movie that takes what could have been a pretty cool movie with a solid story into a nonsensical jumble of trash.
