The episode's title "Everybody Dies" is a reference to the very first episode of the series, which was called "Everybody Lies".
When Taub asks House how he can possibly be in a good mood in the face of Wilson's impending death and House's legal problems, House replies, "did you never see Dead Poets Society? Carpe Diem!" Series star Robert Sean Leonard, who plays Wilson, also starred in Dead Poets Society (in which Leonard's character does die toward the end). Guest appearances of many of the cast members from Dead Poets also appeared in many episodes.
This episode brings back past characters such as Jennifer Morrison as Allison Cameron, Anne Dudek as Amber Volakis, Sela Ward as Stacey Warner, Kal Penn as Lawrance Kutner, Olivia Wilde as Remy 'Thirteen' Hadly and Amber Tamblyn as Martha Masters.
Lisa Edelstein did not return for the shows finale.
Andre Braugher, Anne Dudek, Jennifer Morrison, Kal Penn, Amber Tamblyn, and Sela Ward are credited as Special Guest Stars.

Spoilers

The trivia items below may give away important plot points.

The climax of the finale, is an homage to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Final Problem". In which Sherlock Holmes dies, only to find out he faked his own death.
House quotes Carpe Diem Sieze the day. A reference to Dead Poets Society. An obvious nod to Robert Sean Leonard, who commits suicide in the movie, the overtone of the episode combines with the attempted suicide of the title character in the finale.
