Practical Magic...
12 April 2012 | by (USA) – See all my reviews

So, there I sat, looking through FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND #26- with the man-made monster from the original OUTER LIMITS episode "The Architects Of Fear" on the cover- (which was the episode that inspired WATCHMEN, by the way) and remembering with great fondness all those neat (if sometimes cheesy) monsters that haunted my youth and wondering where they'd all gone. Sure, cgi killed off most of them (and their unborn progeny), but cgis are just fancy shmancy cartoons; there's nothing really cool about most of them. "Practical effects," as rendered by Mr. Hall and Company, are STILL the only way to go, in my own ever-humble opinion, and THE OUTER LIMITS (the ORIGINAL series) still stands as a towering monument to said "practical effects." Watching the SOTA crew at work takes me back- back to the days of FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND and the monsters that lived therein. Give me flesh and blood (and foam rubber latex) or stop-motion animation any day of the week.
