Plenty of suspects; plenty of motives
10 April 2012 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

After a last minute change in the schedule this became the second story in the Spring 2012 season; The story opened with the discovery of what appears to have been a domestic incident that left a woman and her daughter dead and her step son in a coma. Harry is the pathologist sent to the scene and matters are slightly complicated by the fact that he knew the family already; he claims he wasn't particularly close to them so is allowed to proceed. The police suspect the killer is most likely the woman's husband as he is missing but when he returns to the scene apparently unaware of what happened it seems less likely that he did it. Evidence soon emerges which appears to prove that the husband was at a hotel in Nottingham on the night of the murder and if that is true there is no way he could have done it… there are still plenty of suspects left though; the woman's brother in law, her ex-husband or even the teenaged boy living opposite who had a fixation on the dead girl. As the story progresses we learn that few people have being telling the whole truth and by the time the truth comes out we learn not only who the killer was but also of several affairs and even a case of incest.

This was another gripping mystery for the team of pathologists; while Nikki was officially leading the investigation this was a Harry led episode and Tom Ward did a good job in the role. There were plenty of suspects and whenever it appeared that it was obvious who did it new evidence emerged to suggest their influence. When we do finally learn who the killer was it comes as quite a shock; not because that person wasn't suspicious but because it appeared impossible for them to have done it… this wasn't a cop out solution though as it is clearly and believable shown how it was possible. The only real weak point in the episode was the unnecessary subplot involving Leo and the woman giving the department an important new piece of equipment although is it didn't waste much time it wasn't that much of a problem.
