Blu-ray Review: Found Footage Anthology ‘V/H/S’ Falls Frighteningly Flat

28 December 2012 6:25 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – There are a great many talented people involved in the over-hyped, underdeveloped horror anthology, “V/H/S.” It’s a sad sight to see so many gifted filmmakers assembled for a project so misguided. What could’ve been a launching pad for several exciting careers ends up being a mildly diverting curiosity well worth taping over.

Brad Miska’s concept of a “Creepshow”-style amalgam of found footage shorts is certainly promising in theory, but he falters in the execution. At an interminable running time of 116 minutes, the concept outstays its welcome several times over. Miska’s interview in the disc’s plentiful special features indicate that he wasn’t shrewd enough to cut the segments down to sharpen the pacing, while cutting others altogether.

Blu-ray Rating: 2.0/5.0

The wraparound vignette, “Tape 56,” was shot before any of the shorts had been planned, and its disjointed presence in the film is a conspicuous distraction. »

¡Ay, Carumba! Watch Paranormal Activity 4's Latino Easter Egg

27 December 2012 10:55 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

We've been telling you about the Paranormal Activity franchise's Latino-themed cousin for a while now, and with the home video release of the fourth film (which contained an Easter egg after the credits) looming, said egg has made its way online via bootleg.

Screenwriter and director Christopher Landon will be bringing us the as of yet untitled movie. The spinoff will include the demon from the Pa franchise and star mostly Latino actors and film partly in Spanish. ”This will be an off-shoot aimed at the groups who have been the biggest supporters of the property: Latinos and folks in Latin America – Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina,” said a Paramount insider.

Stay tuned for more as it comes. Any of our Spanish-speaking readers care to translate in our comments section?

Sneak Peek at the Latin Paranormal Activity Spin-Off

27 December 2012 10:16 AM, PST | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

This pirated video has been on You Tube since October, however, eyes are now finally getting on it.  If you stuck around through the credits for Paranormal Activity 4, you saw a post-credits teaser for Blumhouse Productions' forthcoming Latin spin on Paranormal Activity.  The project has been on the radar for a bit now, however, everyone has been rather hush-hush on the production front.

Apparently, the spin-off isn't so much connected to the Paranormal Activity series as it is something in the same vein.  Expect to see it in theaters next fall.

Looking Back: Tim Picks the Five Best Horror Films from the Year 2012

26 December 2012 12:35 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Since the horror genre is pretty much always ignored when awards season rolls around, this year, we figured our horror guru and The Golden Briefcase co-host Tim Buel should take the time to honor some of the best horror films of 2012. For my money, I think there's only a handful of truly great horror films in any given decade, but our own Tim Buel sees many more films in that genre than I do each year. So without further adieu, here are Tim's picks for the five best horror films of 2012. We'll tell you right now that Paranormal Activity 4 will not be found on this list, and you may not have even heard of a few of these films. Read on! #5. The Innkeepers Ti West's The House of the Devil was a huge sleeper hit with horror buffs when it came out in 2009, so everyone was greatly »

The Top 10 Horror Films Of 2012

25 December 2012 7:21 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Another year, another bucket of guts, another pile of severed limbs, another rack of bloodied knives…you get the picture. Now, while I will admit it was a hell of a lot easier coming up with a Bottom 10 for the horror genre in 2012, this year saw for some exceptionally memorable films as well, some transcending heights further than I could have imagined. For all the mainstream movies still alive and kicking today though, my list sees more entries from foreign and independent sources, a trend witnessed since starting these yearly recaps on my old blog a few years back. For every Paranormal Activity 4 or Resident Evil: Retribution, there’s a director out there willing to take a chance on something unique and never before seen, truly going where no horror director has. Not to say mainstream horror can’t be good, just look at last year’s Insidious, but again, »

Paranormal Activity 4 Coming To Blu-Ray In January

23 December 2012 10:40 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Paramount will be bringing Paranormal Activity 4 to Blu-Ray in January. The Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman-directed found-footage horror flick stars Katie Featherston and Kathryn Newton.

We’ve officially reached the (hopeful) decline of the Paranormal Activity series. This fourth installment actually disappointed at the box office this past October, despite still making more than enough money to keep the franchise breathing. It failed to match the third film’s numbers, which means the studio will at the very least begin discussions about how they want to start ending up the series.

We’re still a good three or four films away from calling it quits (me thinks), but I wouldn’t hold out for too much longer.

This fourth entry is perhaps the dullest and most unappealing one of them all. It trades in scares for painfully long build-ups that result in the same old jump scares and »

Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen Shack Up in Scary Movie 5 Trailer

22 December 2012 11:46 AM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen's roles in Scary Movie 5 are expected to be nothing more than brief cameos, but their unlikely tabloid fueled pairing is driving all the buzz behind the latest horror spoof flick.

Scary Movie 5 actually centers around Ashley Tisdale's character Jody, the new occupant of a home previously owned by the characters played by Sheen and Lohan. The first trailer released yesterday via MTV introduces Jody in a scene ripped right out of Paranormal Activity 4 in which she and a friend chat on Skype and soon discover one of them is definitely not alone.

The found-footage phenomenon seems to be the main inspiration for Scary Movie 5 so many references to the "Paranormal Activity" franchise are expected. What isn't expected is Leonardo DiCaprio showing up as a spoof on his Inception dream thief and offering a rather unconventional solution to Jody's problems. »

‘Scary Movie 5′ First Look: Trailer Released — Watch

22 December 2012 8:50 AM, PST | HollywoodLife | See recent HollywoodLife news »

Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen witness paranormal activity in the new trailer for ‘Scary Movie 5!’ Will you be lining up to see this new horror spoof?

In the first installment of the Scary Movie series that doesn’t include Anna Faris, Ashley Tisdale takes over the lead role and provides a breath of fresh air to the aging franchise.

While we certainly miss Anna in the lead role, Scary Movie 5 looks to be just as funny as the rest of the installments. This time around, the film spoofs the Paranormal Activity movies and adds a bit of comedic humor from the likes of Inception and Lindsay Lohan’s real life legal drama.  (She pokes fun at her probation being revoked — and this was filmed before it actually happened! Is Lindsay a psychic?)

The trailer starts by spoofing familiar scenes from Paranormal Activity 4, which was released earlier this year. »

Parental Guidance Review

20 December 2012 9:28 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

From a distance, Parental Guidance looks like your usual family holiday movie with its adult cast interacting with small children in ways that seem embarrassing. It does run on a formula that has been used to death in movies – that of adults having a nightmare of a time trying to wrangle kids who have far more energy than they do – and you might expect it to act as an advertisement for the latest cool toy all the kids will want for Christmas. However, the movie turns out to be quite a surprise, as it features some very funny moments as well as ones that will warm the hearts of even the most jaded moviegoers.

Billy Crystal stars as Artie Decker, a sports announcer for a minor league baseball team who still has aspirations to work with the San Francisco Giants. Reality comes crashing down, however, when he is fired from »

The James Clayton Column: 2012 - the mirrorverse movie year

Feature James Clayton Dec 21, 2012

With 2012 drawing to a close, James looks back over the year's movies - as seen from a strange alternate universe...

So 2012, then. Helluva ride, huh? I saw many films and some of them were films within films and films about films and now we’ve all ended up in a disaster movie of our own at the arrival of the Mayan apocalypse that Mel Gibson warned us about way back when. We didn’t even get to enjoy Christmas.

Never mind though. Before Jaguar Paw came screaming out of the Mesoamerican rainforest and we all perished as doomsday struck, we watched some brilliant movies. The past calendar year has been packed with superb cinematic releases, and looking back from the other side of oblivion, I see that we were spoiled.

Unfortunately, from this standpoint on the flipside of forever, I can’t actually see the old timeline of reality. »
