The Chances dream of winning riches and fame at the National Invention Convention Extravaganza, whose star Andrew Dice Clay is announced to a stop in town. Each family member is supposed to come up with one brilliant novelty, but only greediest Virginia actually does so alone, sponges under the armpits to save deodorant. Jimmy dares not offend Sabrina by turning down her 'improvement', which actually wrecks his idea, a mob operated by a crawling baby. Burt and half-wit neighbor protégé Andrew come up with bro-gurt, macho flavors of yogurt. Competition day proves ruthless for candidates on various grounds, with a sting. Written by
Did You Know?
The sequences at the inventors competition turn out to be filled with allusions to the movie The Wizard of Oz. From the emerald-colored set pieces to the lines: 'follow the yellow carpet", "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" and "You're a very bad man" together with the brains-heart-courage speech; Hope's ruby shoes being clicked together ("you could've gone home any time you wanted"); Maw Maw in witch-green avocado mask and black traffic cone hat cackling about her drippy ice cream ("it's melting!"). The homage is driven home over credits when the Chances mull over the idea of trying to watch The Wizard of Oz on TV past the first ten minutes for once and dismiss it (paying for a color TV then watching a black and white movie), concluding with the remark there's no place like home. What about a TV channel just for news?
[pauses and thinks
Wait; they'll have to fill up too many hours and resort to sensationalizing non issues and stirring up partisan bickering. Scratch that idea, it sucks.
