SiREN Interview: Director Gregg Bishop on Subverting Horror Gender Roles

5 December 2016 10:00 AM, PST | Screen Anarchy | See recent Screen Anarchy news »

Gregg Bishop first caught our attention back in 2008 with his hilarious zomedy, Dance of the Dead (review). That film also caught the attention of Sam Raimi, who released it under his Ghost House deal with Lionsgate. But, like the titular siren in his latest film, Bishop lay dormant for the nearly ten years following. Now, with his slight-of-hand V/H/S: Viral segment "Dante the Great", and the gender subverting new horror feature SiREN,  an adaptation of David Bruckner's V/H/S segment "Amateur Night", it appears Bishop is back in fine form.   In the film, a bachelor party becomes a savage fight for survival when the groomsmen unwittingly unleash a fabled predator upon the festivities. ScreenAnarchy: Hi Gregg! Congrats on directing SiREN, the first V/H/S spin-off feature. Gregg Bishop: Thank you!...

Film Review: ‘Siren’

2 December 2016 10:31 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Easily the best segment in the 2012 franchise-starting, found-footage omnibus “V/H/S” was its first, “Amateur Night,” in which a trio of frat-type dudes out to shoot some consensual-or-not porn with unwitting “real” girls find that one bar pickup isn’t a girl — or even human — at all. It was short, sweet, and shocking. None of those qualities quite carry over to “Siren,” a belated feature expansion of the earlier film, with Hannah Fierman the only major returning talent, as the titular creature. Encompassing more conventional genre material than its predecessor (and jettisoning the found-footage angle, perhaps thankfully), this is nonetheless an energetic and entertaining exercise that could spawn its own spin-offs. Chiller Films opened “Siren” on a handful of U.S. screens Dec. 2, with DVD and streaming release following four days later.

Exclusive: Steve Harvey Wishes Kanye West the 'Best' After Hospitalization, Jokes He Might Follow His Lead

2 December 2016 5:09 PM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Steve Harvey is known for his comedic timing, but the funnyman showed a more sincere side when it came to discussing Kanye West's recent hospitalization.

"I love Kanye," Harvey told Et. "I've met him personally. He's a cool guy to me. I just wish him the best."

West was released from the hospital earlier this week after spending nine days at UCLA Medical Center. Harvey even had advice for the embattled star, saying, "Just surround yourself with well-meaning people -- people who care about you."

On a lighter note, the comedian teased that West might have found a good way of taking a break from the showbiz grind.

"I think I'm going to take a page from him," Harvey joked. "I think I'm going to just snap and go off, and go lay down for a month. I think that's »

Interview: Justin Welborn Talks Playing Mr. Nyx in SiREN & Reflects on Dance Of The Dead

2 December 2016 2:43 PM, PST | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

He owns an array of strange items that could rival the displays of Marvel's The Collector, and with a heavenly voice that can kill, Lily is the prized possession of the eccentric Mr. Nyx in Gregg Bishop's SiREN. Based on David Bruckner's "Amateur Night" segment from V/H/S, SiREN comes out in theaters today from Chiller Films (ahead of its VOD, Digital HD, and DVD release on December 6th), and Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Nyx himself, Justin Welborn, who discussed bringing the enigmatic character to life in his fourth collaboration with Gregg Bishop, and also reflected on their midnight movie masterpiece, Dance of the Dead.

What was your initial reaction when you heard that they wanted to do a feature film adaptation of David Bruckner's segment from V/H/S?

Justin Welborn: Well, Bruckner actually called me up and asked me about. »

Review: ‘V/H/S’ Expansion ‘SiREN’ Creates a New Mythology

1 December 2016 2:01 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Adapted from the segment “Amateur Night” from anthology film V/H/S, Gregg Bishop‘s SiREN intrigued me mainly because he didn’t create the original. That’s how impactful producers felt this vignette proved, enough to spark interest for an expansion beyond its creative team. David Bruckner — the source material’s director and co-writer with Nicholas Tecosky — stayed on as an executive producer while working second unit, ultimately passing the baton to Bishop in order to focus on his own feature Southbound. In that respect this project could be labeled as a full-fledged remake with screenwriters Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski crafting an entirely new mythology. They saw Lily (Hannah Fierman) as more than a succubus wreaking havoc upon co-eds. They saw a feral siren desperate to escape from underneath an entrepreneurial occultist’s thumb.

I’d argue that the enigmatic Mr. Nyx (Justin Welbron) steals the spotlight from »

‘SiREN’ Exclusive Clip: A Bachelor Party Falls Off the Rails When a Predator Goes on the Prowl

29 November 2016 9:00 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The new horror thriller film “SiREN” asks the question, “How far off the rails can a bachelor party go?” The answer is pretty far, especially if there’s a predator on the loose. The film follows an apprehensive groom-to-be Jonah (Chase Williamson) whose last hurrah before tying the knot turns nightmarish when he frees a seemingly innocent girl from a supernatural sex club. Her ruthless handler will stop at nothing to recapture his prize, but while Jonah struggles to rescue the girl, he soon discovers that she is a dangerous fabled predator that has chosen him as her mate. “SiREN” co-stars Justin Welborn (“The Final Destination”), Michael Aaron Milligan (“The Last Heist”), Hayes Mercure (“Mascots”), Randy McDowell (“Paranormal Activity”) and Hannah Fierman (“American Hell”). SiREN Review

29 November 2016 8:51 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

David Bruckner’s “Amateur Night” segment of V/H/S is a crowd favorite amongst franchise fans, so you can imagine the excitement surrounding this year‘s feature-length Chiller adaptation. SiREN marks the cinematic return of Hannah Fierman’s beloved psycho-nymph, but how would the devilish songstress fare without a found footage perspective or Bruckner’s vision? V/H/S alumn Gregg Bishop steps in to direct a bachelor-party-gone-wrong script written by Luke Piotrowski, in an attempt to enchant viewers expecting the same obsessive terror with a lesser production feel than Bruckner’s minutes-long short. Prepare to be un-a-mused, hopeless horror romantics…

Chase Williamson stars as the unfortunate apple of Lily’s (Hannah Fierman) eye, a soon-to-be husband named Jonah who’s gearing up for his wild stag party. Brother Mac (Michael Aaron Milligan) is in charge of the festivities, which are of the typical bachelor persuasion. Garden City plays »

V/H/S Segment Gets Feature Treatment in First SiREN Trailer; Arriving This December!

27 October 2016 4:55 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

David Bruckner’s “Amateur Night” was one of the real standout parts of 2012’s V/H/S. Doing a great job of setting characters up for a good time and paying off with one hell of a second half, the segment was a lot of fun and quite terrifying at the same time. Now, with Dance Of The Dead/V/H/S:viral director Gregg Bishop at the helm, the popular segment has received the feature treatment in the form of SiREN, which sees the original short’s antagonist being transplanted into a brand new story involving a bachelor party gone horribly wrong. Hitting theaters on December 2nd and VOD, Digital HD and DVD on December 6th, the Chase Williamson (John Dies At The End, The Guest)-led frightfest now has a trailer and we’re very happy to share with you fright fanatics. ‘SiREN’ Trailer: Feature Adaptation of ‘V/H/S’ Segment Is Like a Horror ‘Hangover’

27 October 2016 12:59 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

If horror movies have taught us anything, it’s that you probably shouldn’t follow a dude you meet at a strip club to a second location. That important rule appears to have been lost on the characters of “SiREN,” a feature-length adaptation of the “Amateur Night” segment from 2012’s “V/H/S.” Watch its trailer below.

The trailer begins with four bros loaded into an SUV for a “Hangover”–style bachelor party, which is sure to cause many to cheer on their imminent demise. They eventually make their way to the remote brothel of the title, a luxe mansion with enough weirdness to instantly identify itself as a bad place; once there, they learn that a woman who works there is more than she appears to be.

Synopsis: SiREN is a horror-thriller about Jonah, an apprehensive groom-to-be whose bachelor party turns into a nightmare when he frees a seemingly innocent victimized girl locked up in a supernatural sex club.
