Peter Savage, who wrote, directed and stars in the film, grew up with Jake La Motta and Rocky Graziano on the streets of NYC in the years after the Depression. Graziano's autobiography, "Somebody Up There Likes Me," which was made into a film in 1956 (Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956)) starring Paul Newman and Pier Angeli, may have been the inspiration for Savage to start writing about his and Jake's early lives in "Raging Bull" in 1963, which was made into Raging Bull (1980).
