Contrary to popular belief, the Japanese are not totally averse to watching war movies, with Clint Eastwood’s Letters from Iwo Jima and Peter Webber’s Emperor being fairly well-received in recent years. However, those films undoubtedly owed their success to the presence of revered Japanese actors Ken Watanabe and Toshiyuki Nishida, boy-band idol Kazunari Ninomiya and the calmly authoritative Tommy Lee Jones (who is so big over here that he fronts a major coffee brand). Given that Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk offers none of the above, one wondered how the Tokyo media conference, held at the plush Roppongi Hills complex on Thursday […] »

Charades, the Paris-sales banner recently launched by Carole Baraton, Yohann Comte and Pierre Mazars — former sales execs at Wild Bunch, Gaumont and StudioCanal, respectively — rolled into Cannes with its first slate, headlined by Mamoru Hosoda’s “Mirai” (working title), Peter Webber’s “Inna de Yard,” Juan Solanas’ “My Name Is Luz” and Devashish Makhija’s “Ajji.”
“Inna de Yard” is a documentary feature directed by Webber, who previously helmed “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” “Emperor” and “Hannibal Rising.” Laurent Baudens, Laurent Flahault and Gael Nouaille are producing the doc via Borsalino Prods.
Taking place above Kingston in Jamaica, the film follows legendary voices of reggae including Ken Boothe, Winston McAnuff, Kiddus I and Cedric Myron, who reunite to record the “Inna de Yard,” which revisits their staple songs. The film also delivers a snapshot of everyday lives of these musicians, who reminisce about their collaborations with Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff. »

Marvel Music/Hollywood Records have released the digital versions of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2 songs-only album and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 original score album by composer Tyler Bates (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “John Wick Chapter 2,” “Watchmen”).
The film opens in U.S. theaters on May 5, 2017.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is filled with great action, humor and performances, but it is also infused with a new mixed tape and soundtrack, a dynamic that resonated deeply with audiences in the first film as evidenced by the success of the soundtrack album. The Grammy-nominated “Guardians of the Galaxy” soundtrack reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, becoming the first soundtrack album consisting entirely of previously released songs to top the chart. The album was certified Platinum by the R.I.A.A.

There are precious few things in this world which cannot be improved by a measure of silliness – and Zhang Yimou’s not entirely historically accurate story of a legendary alien battle at The Great Wall of China is no exception. In combining his trademark gravity defying fight sequences with thousands of green blooded CGI monsters, Zhang has contrarily crafted a very beautiful and wildly expensive B-Movie.
William (Matt Damon) and Tovar (Pedro Pascal) are soldiers for hire, wandering the wilds of China in search of a source of black powder – gunpowder – to sell to the highest bidder upon their return to the west. When their group is ambushed late one night William’s mercenary training ensures the pair’s safety and grants them a gory and unusual get-out-of-certain-death-free card as they stumble across a secret army preparing for the fight of their lives.
