In addition to "The Shining" there are numerous references to "Rosemary's Baby". The neighbors are the Farrows. Rosemary was played by Mia Farrow. Also, the wife's first name is Rose Marie, and she is a dead ringer for Mia Farrow in the movie.
The twins are named Birdie and Berniece Turkle. Joe Turkle played Lloyd the bartender in The Shining.
In one scene, Gus slips off a chair while looking in a vent. Dule Hill actually slipped off the chair during one take. Hill kept his balance and stayed in character, and episode director/costar James Roday Rodriguez thought it was a great physical moment, so the take was used in the final cut.
Carlton's next door neighbors, the Farrows, have a son named Tony. This is a nod to Danny Torrance's imaginary friend in The Shining.
Louis Gosett Jr. is named Lloyd as tribute to Daniel Lloyd who played Danny in The Shining.
