The prior episode (reviewed also by the writer) was one of the worst of the series but here the team is back in the groove.

First of all, any episode with Janet Montgomery is automatically going to be a cut above.

More importantly, and I have spent dozens and dozens of reviews on this point, the writers found how to "connect" with the audience via the plight of the Gwen character.

That is all it takes to make a difference.

And the "enchantment" scene where Merlin alone sees the reality of what is before him ... brilliant.

An Episode I Return To Again And Again.....

I make no secret of just how beautiful and heartfelt I find the music of Merlin to be - especially The Bond Of Sacrifice and Knights Of The Round Table which feature in almost every episode. Here, several scenes bring a lump to my throat enhanced by the score: 1) "Have you not slept, Sire?" 2) "Are you not a fan of hunting?" 3) "There'll be no more sport today." 4) "I would give my kingdom to be so loved." Oh my goodness me, just thinking about these scenes is making me tearful. The writing, acting, direction and of course the music simply take this episode to another level. It adds another layer that Princess Mithian is actually a really lovely person who, under other circumstances, would have made a perfect partner for Arthur.

This is definitely in my top 10 episodes and very often when I want an episode of beauty to watch or listen to, then this has to be the one. Thoroughly recommended again and again and again.

Oh deer

All together a solid episode, sets the stage nicely for the usual end of season battle royale. The deer thing was comically bad though, could have seriously done without that.
