Carla Gugino plays Assistant Director Goodall, whose first name is never given, but is unofficially based on Karen Sisco. When introduced to Raylan, he is surprised by her last name. This is because Carla Gugino is actually reprising the character of the same name from her television series Karen Sisco (2003), which is also based on a character Elmore Leonard created. In her show, Karen Sisco worked in the Miami office, the same office from which Raylan was transferred from in the first episode of this series. The character of Karen Sisco was also portrayed by Jennifer Lopez in the movie, Out of Sight (1998).
The opening scene, in which Winona's comments about manipulative people lead to Raylan realizing Boyd was using him, was suggested by Timothy Olyphant.
FX did not own the rights to Elmore Leonard's Karen Sisco stories, so Carla Gugino's character was merely known as Assistant Director Goodall.
The producers brought a technical adviser, who owned a barbecue restaurant in the San Fernando Valley, to advise Mykelti Williamson (Ellstin Limehouse) on set on his butchery and barbecue skills.
First appearance of Mykelti Williamson as Ellstin Limehouse, who had input into the character's exterior appearance. Williamson, who has perfectly straight and white teeth himself, wore crooked prosthetic teeth for his role to better reflect the character he was playing. He also wore shoddy clothes to play Limehouse, whom he saw as "so busy taking care of everyone else, he can't really take care of himself."
