CHiPs movie review: they promised chip would happen, and it did

27 March 2017 2:22 PM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

MaryAnn’s quick take… Toilet humor, cars exploding for no reason, random naked boobies, and gay panic… although, weirdly, also lots of awkward, unerotic nearly naked Dax Shepard. I’m “biast” (pro): enjoyed the TV show, but I was like eight then

I’m “biast” (con): enough with the reboots

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

In 2011, the comedian and actor Dax Shepard made his feature debut with the mockumentary Brother’s Justice. In it, he plays a version of himself as — in the words of Gary Goldstein in the Los Angeles Times — “an impulsive, clueless narcissist on a journey to reinvent himself as an action star.” The plot involves Shepard running around Hollywood trying to raise money to make a cash-grab action movie starring himself. His 2012 second feature as writer and director (and star), action comedy Hit and Run, might have looked like a fulfillment of that dream, »

Review: ‘CHiPs’ is a Frantic, Lowbrow Action-Comedy

24 March 2017 1:31 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Borrowing character names and a few elements from the Larry Wilcox- and Erik Estrada-led television drama CHiPsDax Shepard’s remake feels more like a big-budget reboot of his delightful shit-kicking action comedy Hit and Run. His sophomore feature as a director delivers, fittingly, a few sophomoric laughs operating at the same frantic energy level as his previous film. Although its structure is similar to that of a loose Judd Apatow sensibility (which can be quite painful, as was the “extended cut” of the 40-Year-Old Virgin), CHiPs is a buddy comedy that’s more interested in homosocial bonding than the actual mission. The problem is the bonding, as sweet as it is, grows a little tiring and the film is structured so that we’re far ahead of our heroes, and where’s the fun in that?

‘Beauty and the Beast’ Will Overpower ‘Power Rangers’ and Other Openers

23 March 2017 10:57 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

How big will Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” be?

Continuing to forge ahead after its record-breaking opening gross last weekend, the live-action remake should outgross three new releases by about 150 percent. It’s unfair to judge any of the new titles against juggernaut “Beauty,” which has already amassed $206 million (unprecedented for pre-May) in its first five days domestic, $428 million worldwide. This weekend “Beauty and the Beast” looks to fall somewhere in the $80-100 million range and should hit a staggering $300 million in its first ten days.

This makes it hard for any newcomers to make much impact.

Lionsgate’s $100 million reboot of “Power Rangers” will easily outpace Sony’s latest outer space adventure “Life” as well as Warner Bros.’ remake of 1970s California Highway Patrol TV hit “Chips.”

Exclusive: Dax Shepard on Casting Kristen Bell as a 'Sh*thead' and Directing His Own Nude Scene

23 March 2017 9:00 AM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Not 24 hours before I met up with Dax Shepard to discuss his CHiPs reboot (or as it's now called, Chips), Kristen Bell had done the same, interviewing her husband and their costar, Michael Peña, as a special correspondent for Entertainment Tonight. That's a tough act to follow, and even more so after hearing how she did from Shepard: "Much hotter than your average host, I gotta say," he deadpanned. "I don't actually know who she was replacing, so that's not directly comparing her to someone else. But any question that she asks goes down with a spoonful of sugar."

Despite the taste of my questions (salty?), Shepard happily discussed his wife and how she ended up playing a "sh*thead" in his movie, the perks of casting famous friends, and hard-r ratings -- it's the same Chips you love, now with more dick jokes!

Power Rangers Won’t Give Beauty And The Beast Much Trouble -- The Weekend Warrior

23 March 2017 7:25 AM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

So we’re going to try something different this week, because the Weekend Warrior has been getting a little long in the tooth, and we’re worried that our busy readers may prefer shorter and more concise pieces. We’ll give this a try over the next few weeks and maybe I’ll write a little more when there’s a bigger movie opening.

How Will Power Rangers and Two Other Movies Fare Against Disney’s Beauty and the Beast?

This past weekend, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast reigned supreme with nearly $175 million--over $20 million more than my prediction (ouch!)--and even with a substantial drop this weekend, it’s unlikely that any of the three new movies will be able to »

CHiPs Red Band Trailer Gets Raunchy with Ponch and Jon

2 March 2017 8:05 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Though it's another raunchy, R-rated take on a classic TV show, CHiPs hasn't gotten the same kind of promotional push as this year's Baywatch. An adults only update on the hit adventure series from the late 70s, CHiPs will be in theaters in less than a month, and we've barely heard anything about it. Following the first trailer released just weeks ago, Warner Bros. has delivered a go-for-broke red band sneak peek that is sure to tease, tantalize, and really get a few old school fans worked up. This isn't the CHiPs your grandparents used to know!

Jon Baker and Frank "Ponch" Poncherello have just joined the California Highway Patrol in Los Angeles, but for very different reasons. Baker is a professional motorbike rider who's trying to put his life and marriage back together. Poncherello is a cocky, undercover FBI agent who's investigating a multimillion dollar heist that may be an inside job. »

Set Visit: Everything you need to know about CHiPs! Action! Stunts! Nudity!

28 February 2017 10:09 AM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

A few years back, writer/director/actor Dax Shepard offered up a pretty cool action comedy called Hit And Run. The one thing that always struck me about the independent film is how surprisingly awesome the action and the car chases happened to be. So when I first heard that he was taking on a reinterpretation of the classic Seventies series Chips, frankly I was very curious about what he could do with it.... Read More »

Ponch and Jon Return in CHiPs Movie Character Posters

23 February 2017 11:01 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Warner Bros. has released two new character posters for the highly-anticipated CHiPs remake, featuring the new Jon Baker (Dax Shepard) and Frank 'Ponch' Poncherello (Michael Pena). While these officers may certainly be unorthodox, Ponch has a "mind for action" while Jon possesses and "appetite for justice," although these posters don't necessarily reflect that. Jon is seen spilling his lunch on his uniform, while Ponch is seen holding a woman's bra. They're clearly two of the California Highway Patrol's finest.

The movie is based on the original TV series of the same name, where motorcycle officers Jon Baker (Larry Wilcox) and Frank "Ponch" Poncherello (Erik Estrada) cruised the freeways of Los Angeles, solving crimes and helping people in trouble. The show debuted on NBC on September 15, 1977 and ran for 6 seasons. While the season finale aired in May 1983, Ponch and Jon would return more than a decade later. Stars Erik Estrada and »

CHiPs Movie Trailer: Ponch and Jon Are Back

11 January 2017 7:59 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Warner Bros. recently bumped up the release of their upcoming R-rated take on the buddy cop show CHiPs, which means a couple of things. One, the studio seems to have some confidence in the movie and two, they really need to start marketing it. That being the case, the first trailer for the upcoming CHiPs movie has arrived, and it is big on action and comedy.

A little tease for this first trailer was revealed earlier by the Warner Bros. Twitter account which showed a lot of motorcycle stunts wrapped in laughs, which makes it appear as though CHiPs will make good use of its R-rating. Warner Bros. also announced that the first trailer would debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and as promised, it did. We now have a good idea of what this new take on the material from director Dax Shepard, who is also starring in the movie, »

First CHiPs Movie Footage Has Insane Action and Big Laughs

11 January 2017 11:57 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Following the first CHiPs photo released last month, Warner Bros. has debuted the first poster and a brief trailer preview, giving fans a sneak peek before the first full trailer is unveiled tonight on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The trailer preview gives us our first look at Jon Baker (Dax Shepard) and Frank "Ponch" Poncharello (Michael Pena) in action, as they begin their new partnership as members of the California Highway Patrol. If that wasn't enough, we also have the first poster, which shows Baker and Ponch doing a little fist bump while they ride through a crime scene.

The trailer preview, which debuted on the new Warner Bros. Twitter account for the movie, shows Ponch crashing his bike while in pursuit of a suspect, along with the catchy tagline "Bros before PoPos." Last month, Warner Bros. pushed CHiPs up to a spring release date of March 24, after the studio delayed »
