We went to see The Man with the Jazz Guitar at our local cinema as part of the annual jazz festival on the Isle of Bute. The story of jazz guitarist and broadcaster Ken Sykora who amongst loads of other things owned and ran the Colintraive Hotel just across the water from north Bute for 5 years in the 70's. Ken Sykora left an immense archive of music, photos and documents. This and the testimony of his family and friends provided the film makers with a valuable resource and they have produced a beautifully touching film - a must see even if you're not a fan of Jazz music in particular. This screening was made all the more poignant by the fact our friend and his daughter Alison Sykora was sitting behind us. Don't think she noticed the tears rolling down my cheeks!

The Man with the Jazz Guitar is a wonderful documentary about the life of Ken Sykora. His life story is told through a captivating mix of personal memories shared by family and friends, his music, scripts, photographs and animation. The many hobbies of this fascinating man are weaved through his achievements in music and broadcasting which kept me both interested in him as a person and an artist. His personal and family life are touchingly told by those closest to him and the successes and sadness in his life were discussed openly and honestly leaving you feeling that you had been allowed to get to know Ken personally. The film has a lovely balance of pace of lively music, beautiful scenery, entertaining animation and story telling. If you get the opportunity to see this film I would certainly recommend it.
