The Scariest Scenes in TV History — IndieWire Critics Survey

6 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: What is the scariest moment or scene on TV?

Ben Travers (@BenTTravers), IndieWire

Though there are moments within “Penny Dreadful” (the seance) and “The X-Files” (“Home”) that left me spooked, the title for scariest TV scene has to go to the only show to give me nightmares — actual, legitimate nightmares. After watching the first two episodes of “Hannibal,” I woke up in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat and haunted by a bright red room with blood running down the walls — twice! Two weeks in a row, “Hannibal” ruined my peaceful slumber, and I had to stop watching the show live (and during the night entirely). Each week, »

Your Face Or Mine: a dating show that's rotten to the core

20 May 2017 2:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Jimmy Carr and Katherine Ryan’s revived gameshow could easily be mistaken for an episode of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror

There is a moment near the end of this week’s Your Face Or Mine – a revival of a short-lived early-00s gameshow in which couples rate each other for their hotness – where we get to see a man’s heart smashed to pieces.

When Louis, a sweet-natured twentysomething with red hair and a defeated grin, is informed by his girlfriend of two years, Aida, that he has a confidence problem – this, after she has announced that she didn’t fancy him in the early days, that he has weird teeth, that she might not be his girlfriend for ever and she would totally bang Harvey from So Solid Crew – he gets a look in his eyes similar to Sandra Bullock’s in Gravity when she realises she is alone in space. »

‘Orange Is the New Black Mirror’ Blends the Best of Netflix’s Worlds

19 May 2017 11:18 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Orange Is the New Black” and “Black Mirror” are two of the most popular original programs currently on Netflix’s lineup. However, Jenji Kohan and Charlie Brooker’s dramas are arguably even more enjoyable with their powers combined, as can be seen in “Orange Is the New Black Mirror.”

Netflix teased the upcoming fifth season of “Oitnb” this week by debuting a crossover commercial parodying the “Black Mirror” Season 3 episode “San Junipero.”

In the clip, Poussey (Samira Wiley) and Taystee (Danielle Brooks) break out of Litchfield to spend some quality time together in San Junipero in place of Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mackenzie Davis’ quirky characters. Everything about the dream sequence just works, most notably the costumes and exceptional re-use of Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.”

Despite having ten episodes of Season 5 leaked by hackers, “Oitnb” is still set to premiere Friday, June 9.

Orange Is the New Black” also stars Taylor Schilling, Laura Prepon »

Newswire: Halt And Catch Fire’s Mackenzie Davis to star in new sci-fi thriller

19 May 2017 8:34 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Some people just prefer certain kinds of stories. Dads love World War I tales. Our outgoing cousin only likes true crime. And Mackenzie Davis, one of the stars of AMC’s Halt And Catch Fire, is well on her way to conquering every single sci-fi universe in existence. She appeared in The Martian. She starred in the “San Junipero” episode of Black Mirror. She’s in the upcoming Blade Runner 2049. She was in some little sci-fi movie called Plato’s Reality Machine that we’ve never heard of, but she was probably great in it. It’s presumably only a matter of time before she’s announced as the new captain of a rival Starfleet ship, gets promoted to a position with the Weyland Yutani Corporation, and is revealed to be Supreme Leader Snoke.

But first, Davis will topline a new sci-fi thriller called Vivarium. Deadline reports the film »

Richard Madden and Holliday Grainger have been cast in the upcoming Amazon anthology series “Philip K Dick’s Electric Dreams,” Variety has learned.

Madden and Grainger will appear in the episode “The Hood Maker.” It is set in a world without advanced technology and where mutant telepaths have become humanity’s only mechanism for long distance communication. But their powers have unintended consequences and when the public begins to embrace mysterious, telepath-blocking hoods, two detectives are brought in to investigate.

Action Comedy Guns Akimbo Taps Daniel Radcliffe To Headline

On the eve of Cannes Film Festival, Variety is reporting that Daniel Radcliffe, star of Imperium and the irreverent Swiss Army Man, has signed on to headline Guns Akimbo for Occupant Entertainment.

Pitched as an action comedy, Jason Lei Howden (Deathgasm) is behind the lens for this one, and we understand Occupant and Altitude Films are preparing to launch sales at Cannes next week – indicating that Radcliffe has climbed aboard in the nick of time.

The former Harry Potter actor will no doubt inject some star power into Guns Akimbo, which chronicles the harrowing story of Miles, an Average Joe who suddenly finds himself forced to fight a gladiator-like battle for a dark website that streams the violence to a rabid, worldwide audience. Evoking memories of Charlie Brooker’s stunning Black Mirror series, Miles then begins his quest to save his kidnapped ex-girlfriend, Nova, by any means necessary. Every once in a while, a really special film comes along that you may have a chance to see at a film festival, but that may not have the biggest studio push behind it when it finally gets released. Jeff Grace’s Folk Hero and Funny Guy is one of those great festival movies that really deserves more attention.

The film stars Wyatt Russell (22 Jump Street), and Alex Karpovsky (Girls) as two childhood friends whose lives went into very different directions in terms of fame and success. Russell’s Jason Black is a hugely-popular singer and songwriter i.e. the folk her of the title, while Karpovsky’s Paul is the funny guy, a struggling stand-up comic for many years. When Paul’s fiancé dumps him, Jason, feeling bad for his friend, throws out the idea of the two of them going on tour with Paul opening for him. The »
