The Ropes has some real heart
2 April 2012 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

I measure any production by how immersed I feel when watching it. I felt completely immersed in The Ropes, and I am left wanting more episodes -- badly.

Everything is working for this show.

How is this possible? I was expecting something kind of toughguy-stupid... but I was rewarded with something so much more emotionally enriching, and powerful. We see certain characters demonstrate how much heart they have, while others reveal how sinister their character flaws really are.

It's executed brilliantly.

This series is a must-see for every film enthusiast, regardless of whether the subject matter interests you, or not. Vin Diesel's name is on this and while I see there are some Vin Diesel influences here, I also so something even bigger going on.

The Ropes has strong and multi-layered characters who are portrayed as though they have a great deal of experience doing what they are doing every night; they are totally believable. Nobody is the fake-cardboard scoundrel, nobody is the fake-cardboard womanizer -- the scoundrel is really a scoundrel, and the womanizer really is a womanizer. I think this possibly has to do with harmonic unison in the production between every department; acting, directing, writing, tech (A/V), shooting and editing are all on point.

I couldn't find a major flaw, in the first viewing.

The plot is pretty minimalist, and it really works here, because the subject matter is seemingly simplistic, so there is a perfect blend of grit and grace. The Ropes is just this amazingly paced tour de force, that builds suspense masterfully, yet keeping us grounded in the subject matter.

There is so much heart going on here, it simply cannot be passed on.
