Fast National ratings for Friday, May 17, 2013
Despite a quiet night on all of the networks, "Nikita" saw soft ratings for its Season 3 finale, landing at the bottom of the ratings pile against a lineup of reality, news programs and repeats. The low-rated -- yet already renewed for a final fourth season -- program only pulled in 1.1 million viewers for the only original scripted program of the night. While an increase over recent weeks, the show has seen higher ratings this season alone.
Thanks mostly to the dominance of two hours of "Shark Tank," the night's highest-rated show, ABC led the night overall, with 5.7 million viewers and a 3.7/7 share in households. NBC's solid night of news programming followed (5.2 million, 3.6/7), with CBS' (4.9 million, 3.3/6) "Undercover Boss"-dominated night rounding out the big three. Fox aired only reruns to come in fourth (2.2 million, 1.5/3), while The CW lagged with 0.9 million viewers (0.6/1).
ABC also won the »

Rock Center with Brian Williams may have been cancelled but NBC's other news program, Dateline, isnt going anywhere. The peacock network quietly renewed the show for a 23rd season when they included it on their 2013-14 schedule.
Currently anchored by Lester Holt, Dateline has been a staple of the network since March 1992 and has become a utility player of sorts -- often airing multiple times in one week, sometimes filling timeslots when other shows get canned.
What do you think? Do you look forward to watching Dateline? How does it compare to the other network news shows? »

Even the anchor of the NBC Nightly News isn't immune to having his show cancelled, as Brian Williams found out yesterday. Rock Center with Brian Williams has been cancelled after two low-rated seasons. The program is expected to stay on the schedule through next month.
Williams issued a statement regarding the cancellation and wrote, "I'm so proud of the work we did. Our people got shot at for this broadcast. They pulled countless all-nighters. They investigated, cajoled, hustled and cared deeply. They won awards, won the respect of their colleagues and produced great television journalism."
One of the awards that he mentions went to Bob Costas for his memorable telephone interview with Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky, who was later convicted of child molestation.

New York — NBC is ordering up a new comedy for next season from "Scrubs" creator Bill Lawrence and an updating of the `70s cop drama "Ironside."
And in a surprise move, the network is bringing back "Community" for a fifth season. This quirky college comedy has struggled in the ratings but enjoys a devoted cult following.
The revived "Ironside" will star Blair Underwood as the paralyzed lawman who uses a wheelchair. That memorable character was originally played by Raymond Burr.
Another new drama, "Chicago Pd," is from producer Dick Wolf ("Law & Order"). It will serve as a companion piece to "Chicago Fire," which premiered this season.
The Lawrence-produced comedy, "Undateable," stars Chris D'Elia (from the just-canceled NBC sitcom "Whitney") as a ladies' man who wants to help a circle of friends who are not so successful with romance.
Other new series include "Welcome to the Family," a comedy starring Mike O'Malley »

Even news programs aren't immune to being axed. NBC has cancelled Rock Center with Brian Williams after two low-rated seasons.
It's actually a wonder that the show was renewed for a second season given its dismal ratings. Last year, on Monday nights, it barely averaged a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 3.54 million viewers. This season, it's done even worse -- drawing a 1.0 rating average.
The numbers held steady when it was moved from Thursdays to Friday nights but was typically trounced by the competition.
Dateline, which also airs on Friday evenings has been averaging a better 1.3 in the demo and 5.18 million.
Word is that Rock Center with Brian Williams will stay on the schedule until some time next month.

Over on the cable end, the TNT network decided not to renew "Monday Mornings," the primetime drama based on the book of the same name, from CNN's Sanja Gupta.
"Monday Mornings" starred former "Law & Order: La" actor Alfred Molina, and "Law & Order: UK" star Jamie Bamber.

The wave of cancellations at NBC in the past couple of days has extended to the news division.
Newsmagazine "Rock Center with Brian Williams" is going off the air after two seasons. Its final episode is set to air June 21.
The show made some headlines early in its run, notably for a November 2011 interview with disgraced Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky. It never gained a strong foothold in the ratings, however, leading to its cancellation
So far this season, "Rock Center" is averaging about 4.1 million viewers per week and a 1.0 rating among adults 18-49. By comparison the Friday and Sunday editions of NBC's other newsmag, "Dateline," each draw about 6 million people and 18-49 ratings of 1.5 (Friday) and 1.3 (Sunday).
Williams remains the anchor of "NBC Nightly News," which is still the most-watched of the network evening news broadcasts. It draws 8.75 million viewers per night, more than twice what "Rock Center" does. »

Because not even the news is safe from being declared no longer “right” for NBC, Rock Center With Brian Williams has also been canceled, a mere two years after it first began the experiment of covering world events with handsomeness. The low-rated show had been bumped around the schedule numerous times in its brief life, finally ending up in a Friday night timeslot where, oddly, it seemed no one really wanted to hear about politics or disasters, even if it meant catching Rock Center “exclusives” like Chelsea Clinton interviewing the Geico Gecko. The final straw came with a recent segment »

NBC canceled its primetime newsmagazine "Rock Center with Brian Williams" on Friday. The New York Times was first to report that the program had been canceled and would broadcast its final show on June 21, less than two years after its November 2011 debut.
"Rock Center," which was a project launched under former NBC News president Steve Capus, struggled to find a steady audience, due in part to multiple scheduling changes. When it first premiered, the show aired on Monday nights. It was quickly moved to Wednesday nights, then to Thursday nights, and most recently to Friday at 10:00 p.m., where it has been since November 2012.
The hourlong program boasted a correspondent roster that featured some of news business' biggest stars, including Ted Koppel, Meredith Vieira, Natalie Morales, Kate Snow and Harry Smith. Chelsea Clinton also served as a "Rock Center" correspondent, and most recently interviewed the Geico Gecko.

Rock Center with Brian Williams has been cancelled by NBC after two seasons.

NBC is turning out the lights on Rock Center With Brian Williams. The primetime news magazine, which premiered in October 2011, has been canceled, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Rock Center launched March 1 of last year, and though it scored several high-profile interviews during the 2012 election cycle, it never managed to take off. June 21 will be the last show. Rock Center was shuffled from Monday to Wednesday to Thursday and ultimately to Friday earlier this year, where its sophomore ratings averaged just a 1.0 rating among adults 18-49 and just north of 4.1

NBC News is planning to make Deborah Turness its new president, multiple outlets reported on Friday.
If announced, Turness, who has run Britain's ITV News since 2004, would become the first female president of a U.S. news network. Former NBC News president Steve Capus stepped down from his role earlier this year amidst rocky times at the news network's cash cow, the "Today" show.
Last month, the Los Angeles Times' Joe Flint reported that NBC News was looking across the pond for its new chief and wrote, "People close to the search said NBC News Chairman Pat Fili-Krushel is intrigued by Turness." When Comcast took over NBC Universal, it restructured the network's news properties by grouping NBC News, MSNBC and CNBC into one entity called NBCUniversal News Group, overseen by Fili-Krushel. If announced as NBC News president, Turness would report to Fili-Krushel, the first female chairman of a U.S. »

Fast National ratings for Friday, May 3, 2013
Although rising slightly from its series low marks last week, ABC's struggling comedy "Happy Endings" finished out Season 3 with typically miserable ratings. After the 8 p.m. half hour hit 2.7 million viewers, the 8:30 p.m. installment -- which could be the show's last ever broadcast on ABC -- cratered to 2.1 million.
Only two "Happy Endings" episodes have ever drawn less viewers, both airing Friday at 8:30 this season. The season finale's 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demo barely tops last week's series low of 0.6. Looks like the producers may want to pursue that USA option as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, following "Happy Endings" pushed a new episode of ABC's solid reality staple "Shark Tank" to a season low in viewers with just 5.5 million. While that number is a little startling for a show that has only slipped below 6 million viewers in one other first-run airing this season, »
