Jon Hamm Pitches a Baseball Reality Show in the ‘Million Dollar Arm’ Trailer

24 December 2013 10:30 AM, PST | | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Just like apple pie, McDonald’s, bald eagles and Beyoncé, baseball is the American way. Once upon a time (read: the 70s-90s, mostly), the Great American Pastime was routinely celebrated in movies like Major League, A League of Their Own, The Natural and, of course, Field of Dreams and Angels in the Outfield (people naturally love baseball ghosts). In the present day, the baseball craze has died down somewhat, possibly due to the fact that the sport hasn’t had a huge, Sammy Sosa/Mark Mcgwire-style showdown in years to get amped over. Recent, serious baseball-centric films like Moneyball and 42, which told the story of Jackie Robinson, have seen success, but there hasn’t been the same wave of feel-good sports flicks that Bobby and his Little League team could go catch after practice together. Now, there’s a film coming down the pipeline that is attempting to fill that void. Here »

Blu-ray Release: Thunderbolt and Lightfoot

23 December 2013 2:11 PM, PST | Disc Dish | See recent Disc Dish news »

Blu-ray Release Date: Feb. 11, 2014

Price: Blu-ray $29.95

Studio: Twilight Time

Clint Eastwood (r.) and Jeff Bridges star in Thunderbolt and Lightfoot.

The 1974 comedy crime thriller Thunderbolt and Lightfoot starring Clint Eastwood (Trouble with the Curve) and Jeff Bridges (The Big Lebowski) makes its Blu-ray debut from Twilight Time.

Eastwood plays a typically laconic loner, a big-time thief in hiding who hooks up with a goofy young drifter (Bridges, giving an Oscar-nominated performance). First attempting to escape from a couple of vengeful former partners (George Kennedy, Geoffrey Lewis), then joining forces with them to pull off a risky robbery, Eastwood and Bridges offer an ultimately touching portrait of masculine friendship.

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot marked the directing debut of screenwriter Michael Cimino of The Deer Hunter fame and Heaven’s Gate infamy, who worked under the meticulous guidance of star/producer Eastwood.

The movie is gorgeously photographed in Montana’s Big Sky country by Frank Stanley, »

American Hustle review: the humor, it burns

13 December 2013 2:28 PM, PST | | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Out-Scorseses Scorsese with its epic ensemble historical crime dramedy bursting with insanely engaging characters who are impossibly real and impossibly ridiculous whose stories you don’t ever want to end. I’m “biast” (pro): love Russell, love the cast, got a great good shiver of awesome off the trailer

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

It’s gotta be a coincidence that just as Martin Scorsese appears to be repeating himself with Wolf of Wall Street — which looks like pretty much the exact same movie as GoodFellas (though I haven’t seen Wolf yet because Paramount is being weird about it) — here comes David O. Russell to up the ante on Scorsese. Right? Because there’s no way Russell could have planned this, film release dates being as fluid as they are. And yet, there are things here that made »

Judge Asked to Render Quick Decision in ‘Trouble With the Curve’ Suit

6 December 2013 5:06 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Both sides in the dispute over the authorship of Warner Bros.’ “Trouble with the Curve” are asking a federal judge to grant summary judgment in the case, in which a college-baseball-player turned screenwriter is accusing Warner Bros. and other defendants of a “conspiracy” to cover up the lineage of the pic’s screenplay.

On Friday, attorneys for Ryan A. Brooks, who contend that his idea for a project called “Omaha” was stolen for 2012 Clint Eastwood movie “Trouble with the Curve,”  filed a motion for partial summary judgment, relying heavily on the opinions of three experts who concluded that not only are the two projects “substantially similar” in “both a qualitative and quantitative respect,” but that “these works are in many respects the same story.”

“In fact, all three experts opine that the two scripts share countless identical details and even a shocking degree of grammatical and stylistic identities and sequences, »

Warner Bros. doesn't think a federal judge should waste much time on a lawsuit that contends its 2012 film, Trouble With the Curve starring Clint Eastwood as a cantankerous aging baseball scout, was stolen and wrongfully held out to be one writer's vision through conspiracy. Exclusive: We Know Where ‘Ant-Man’ Is Shooting

27 November 2013 8:36 PM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

A day ago, word was that Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man will no longer be filming at Pinewood Studios in London, even though Marvel has shot their other films, which include Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor: The Dark World, and they just wrapped up the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. Thanks to tax breaks, the UK has become the international go to place for major Hollywood productions in recent months.

Wright told ScreenDaily the following about the production:

“Ironically, Ant-Man was meant to shoot in London but London is full because I guess that Pinewood extension got turned down.”

Saying that left it unclear where production on the film might be going. All that was known is that there is no room for Ant-Man at Pinewood Studios UK thanks to Star Wars: Episode VII and the next James Bond film…no problem.

'Eastbound and Down' finale: Farewell to pop culture's last baseball star, Kenny Powers

17 November 2013 1:20 PM, PST | - PopWatch | See recent - PopWatch news »

There are many reasons to mourn the end of Eastbound & Down. Danny McBride’s easy, almost casual hilarity, the show’s odd, un-tv-like pace, and the sheer thrill of seeing Will Ferrell on television will all be missed.

But there’s also another thing that the HBO series will take with it when its finale airs tonight, and that’s baseball — or, more specifically, baseball’s place in pop culture.

For years — even decades — people have talked about baseball losing its mantle as America’s favorite pastime, but the topic has flared up again in the past few months. National ratings are down, »

Clint Eastwood’s Son May Star In Fifty Shades Of Grey

18 October 2013 11:48 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Hoping to make his father proud, Clint Eastwood’s son, Scott, may replace Charlie Hunnam in Fifty Shades of Grey. According to Just Jared, the rising actor, who has a role alongside Brad Pitt in the upcoming WWII flick Fury, is testing for the part of Christian Grey in Universal’s adaptation.

Said to have a final decision for us in a few weeks, the studio has narrowed its search down to five, say sources close to the project. Aside from Eastwood, Alexander Skarsgard, Theo James, Francois Arnaud, Jamie Dornen and Christian Cooke are all in the running. But wait, that’s not five, that’s six. Perhaps someone has dropped out?

To be honest, I’m not at all familiar with Mr. Eastwood (Scott, that is). Often credited as Scott Reeves, he’s appeared in films like Invictus, Gran Torino, Trouble With the Curve and Flags of our Fathers (starting to see a pattern? »
