Plot Summary

  • Chummy's imperious,titled mother visits. She looks down on Peter Noakes and leans on her daughter to end the relationship. Chummy considers becoming a nun but,inspired by a young wife whose triplets she delivers in trying circumstances,defies her mother and has her wedding on her own terms. Elderly,senile Sister Monica Joan,prone to wandering around the area shoeless,is arrested for shop lifting and appears in court. Jimmy proves to be the hero of the hour by driving to Chichester to collect the head of the order,Mother Jesu Emanuel,whose speech on behalf of the old lady leads to her acquittal. Jenny then realises that she has been a fool to think that she could have a relationship with the married Gerald who would never leave his wife for her.

  • Sister Monica Joan's dementia has worsened and she is caught red-handed stealing a small spoon from a market stall. The vendor reports the matter to the police but everyone hopes that since the items were of only a small value that they will not prosecute. It all takes on a different tone when Jenny finds some very expensive jewels in the Sister's room. Chummy meanwhile has to deal with a visit from her mother, Lady Browne, who doesn't approve of her relationship with PC Peter Noakes. Chummy's resolve melts away in the face of her stern and demanding mother and her relationship with Peter seems to be at an end. That is until Chummy attends a life-affirming delivery and decides the time has come to stand up for herself.
