(at around 13 mins) Sheldon says that he was able to determine the gun used based on the bullet fragments (a Baikal IJ 70). He then goes on to say that there was no hit on the serial number of the gun. They don't have the gun, therefore wouldn't have a serial number. If they did have the gun, they wouldn't need the bullet fragments to determine the gun used. See more
