20 November 2016 6:01 PM, PST | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Exclusive/Film Bazaar: Indian actor Abhay Deol has set up a banner to acquire critically-acclaimed Indian independent films and work with online platforms to give them a straight-to-digital worldwide release.

The new venture, Abhay Deol Presents, has already acquired three titles – Aditya Vikram Sengupta’s Venice 2014 title Labour Of Love; Payal Sethi’s award-winning short Leeches; and Brahmanand S. Siingh’s documentary Kaagaz Ki Kashti, about Ghazal singer Jagjit Singh, which received a standing ovation when it premiered at Mumbai Film Festival last month.

“As an actor I’ve always wanted to balance mainstream and non-mainstream work but realised there needed to be changes in the distribution system for independent films to happen,” said Deol whose acting credits include indie titles Shanghai and Dev D. “Now digital is here, independent filmmakers finally have a platform, so I decided to take the plunge and explore this space.”

Deol is currently assembling a distribution team to exploit the titles »

Waiting’s ‘Tu hai toh main hoon’ in demand

27 April 2016 12:07 AM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

After receiving a tremendous response for its trailer, with close to 1.7 million views, now there’s much demand for the song of Anu Menon’s ‘Waiting’! The song ‘Tu hai toh main hoon’, which plays in the background of the trailer, has caught everyone’s attention and the audience clearly wants more of it. Giving in to the demand, the makers are now contemplating changing the order of the song release from what they had planned initially.

Music composer Mikey McClearly is known to spin background score and songs high on youth appeal and this is no different. He has earlier worked on films including Margarita with a Straw, Shaitan, Shanghai, David, Bombay Velvet, Nautanki Saala, Shaadi Ke Side Effects, Shaandaar. His songs are upbeat, yet the soothing melody strikes a chord in the hearts of the music-lovers.

"I am still in shock and disbelief. I just can't come to terms with the fact that he is gone so suddenly. Rajesh was such a passionate filmmaker. He gave priority to his cinema over everything else, including his health. Now that we are looking at the release of the film I miss him more than ever. God bless his soul." The Bengali superstar Prosenjit returns to Hindi films after his much applauded role in Dibakar Bannerjee's Shanghai. Says Prosenjit, "It was really sad to see Rajesh Pillai leave us so suddenly. Reflections 2015: Bollywood Razzies of 2015

11 January 2016 3:01 AM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year” goes the Xmas song, but it also applies to sorting through the dreck and crap that came out of Bollywood in 2015. I watched many of these duds so that you don’t have to, and trust me they’re not as hilarious as I’m going to make them, because for every great Jodi like Srk-Kajol in Dilwale there’s Sunny Leone being paired with Ram Kapoor. Yet there were some awful gems like Msg and its sequel that came out in the same year – take that annual Fast and Furious franchise! Herewith is the worst and secretly hilarious of the year.

Worst Actor – Emraan Hashmi for Hamari Adhuri Kahani/Mr X

After doing so well in Shanghai, and Ghanchakkar, Emraan decided to play it safe with his performances in Hamari Adhuri Kahani (paired opposite Vidya Balan) and the atrocious Mr X. »
