Quotes

David Frost: How would you like to be remembered by people? I don't know that you're gonna die tomorrow, thank God you're not. But uh, what would you like your obituary to say?
Olof Palme: That I have never thought of. And I hope that I will, up to the very last breath, not think of it. Because I think so, the moment people begin to think of their obituaries they start to be scared, they don't dare to do things and they lose their vitality. As we are here on earth and we're doomed to be on this earth, we should try to ...

"Moving and somewhat nostalgic reminiscence..."
6 January 2013 | by (Norway) – See all my reviews

Swedish author, journalist and documentary filmmaker Kristina Lindström's debut and Swedish photographer and documentary filmmaker Maud Nycander's eleventh documentary feature about Swedish democratic socialist Olof Palme (1927-1986) which they wrote, premiered in Sweden, was later released as a 174 min three-part television series and is a Sweden-Denmark co-production which was produced by Swedish producers Fredrik Heining and Mattias Nohrberg. It tells the story about Olof Palme, a rhetoric, debater, husband and father of three sons, who in his early forties in October 1969 became the leader of the Social Democratic Party and succeeded Tage Erlander (1901-1985) as prime minister of Sweden.

Through interviews with Olof Palme, family members, former and later prime ministers, friends, politicians, enemies, authors, filmmakers and journalists and super 8 films, newsreels and both private and archive footage, this biographical and in-depth examination draws a multifaceted and nuanced portrayal of a loved, hated and prominent 20th century politician and humanist who came from an upper-class family in Östermalm, Stockholm, who gained international fame during his two periods as the head of government in Sweden during the 1970s and 1980s and who was assassinated by an unknown perpetrator(s) while walking home from a cinema in Stockholm on the 28th of February in 1986.

This humanizing portrait which focuses on Olof Palme as a public and private person in an historical context and on the most significant events in his political career, is impelled and reinforced by its linear narrative structure, voice-over narration and the great score by Swedish musician and composer Benny Andersson which emphasizes the somewhat mythological atmosphere. An informative, heartrending, suspenseful, moving and somewhat nostalgic reminiscence of a period in time and a man who supported gender equality and throughout his life opposed violence, apartheid and racism.
