With an open border between India and Nepal, labour migration to various cities and parts of India has historically been an important economic resource for Nepalese households. Nearly all Nepalese migrant workers are susceptible to high risk sexual behaviour because of the kind of access & freedom of choice, which Mumbai amply provides them with. This is in the form of both intoxicants and contact with sex workers. Thanks to their ill informed promiscuous behaviour they end up contracting HIV. Once they return home they infect their spouses with HIV & their children are born with it. So much so that Far West Nepal, which is the region from where maximum labour migration to Mumbai happens is reeling under the impact of an HIV micro epidemic which is on the verge of blowing into a full - fledged AIDS epidemic. Thanks to which HIV or the resultant AIDS is notoriously referred to in Nepal as Mumbaiyya Rog (The disease from Mumbai)!
