Ruth is disturbed when reclusive neighbour Shirley Dunwich tells her that her surly young son Michael is trying to poison her, and, since Ruth has no liking for Michael, who stole her hub caps for his art installation, she believes her, informing Martin. Unfortunately this leads to a siege situation before Martin rectifies matters. Morwenna's eagerness to please does not endear her to Martin, who sacks her for drug-taking though he reinstates her after finding that she is taking her grandfather's Second World war pep pills in order to be efficient. Louisa hands in her notice as she decides to leave Portwenn for London with Martin and their still unnamed baby. Written by don @ minifie-1

Did You Know?

Towards the end of the episode, Doc Martin refers to Mrs Dunwich (Miriam Margolyes) as Mrs Winchelsea and shortly afterwards he refers to Mr Newcross (Peter Vaughan) as Mr Dunwich. These were not continuity errors in the script; instead they alluded to Doc Martin's poor bedside manner and social skills which cause him to confuse his patients' names. See more »

When Ruth Ellingham gets the gun from the son, Michael Dunwich, Ruth carries it upstairs to Mrs. Dunwich's bedroom. When the scene switches to the Mrs. Dunwich's bedroom, the gun is on the bed already next to Mrs. Dunwich, in the very next scene, it's back in Ruth Ellingham's hands and there's nothing on the bed. Louisa Glasson: Oh, and read him a bed time story. He seems to like the one about the talking fire engine.
Dr. Martin Ellingham: Hm. Highly unlikely he can grasp the concept of a fire engine, let alone one that's apparently sentient.

The Dunwich Horror!
28 April 2015 | by (Bradenton, Florida) – See all my reviews

Miriam Margolyes stars as Shirley Dunwich. She is a completely wacky lady whose son Michael just seems imbalanced.

When the show begins, Doc Martin's unpleasant Aunt Ruth is shocked to see Michael steeling her hubcaps and running away to the property next door. Ruth follows and soon meets his mother, Shirley--who seems perfectly sane one moment and totally insane the next! It's obvious that SOMETHING is wrong with her and her son but these folks refuse to see the Doctor. Eventually, Shirley does come in--after passing out. Eventually it all appears to be a case of poisoning and it appears Michael is poisoning his mom. What's next? See the show.

This is a very goofy episode--much more than usual. Margolyes is a real goofball in this one and the son seems much like one of the Darryls from "Newhart". A strangely enjoyable episode.
