Bang-up episode

Bates (Christopher J. Murphy in fine two-fisted form) decides to leave the group and goes off on his own. However, he soon learns that there's greater safety in numbers. Director/co-writer Patrick Devaney firmly grounds the fantastic premise in a totally believable gritty blue collar urban reality, delivers several startling moments of grisly splatter (one poor guy gets bitten in the shoulder by a zombie), maintains a grimly serious tone throughout, and derives plenty of cracking dramatic punch not only from the dissent amongst the bickering group remembers, but also from the heated theological exchanges between Billy Cassidy (a credible portrayal by Devaney) and disapproving priest Father McAdams (superbly played by Bud Thorpe). The sound acting from the capable cast helps a lot: Teri Hansen registers strongly as no-nonsense nurse Carrie Walker, Rick Martinez likewise does well as the hard-nosed John Salazar, Frank Menendez contributes a menacing turn as sleazy drug dealer Mr. Waco, Christopher Corsi snivels it up nicely as Bates' antsy buddy Vinny, and Kim Santiago makes a scary appearance as a ferocious zombie locked in Mr. Waco's basement. The stark cinematography provides an effectively bleached-out look. Bernadette McCallion's shuddery score does the rattling trick. An impressive show.
