During the hanging of Ellison "Cotton Top" Mounts, the depiction of the scaffold is accurate. At the time of the execution, Kentucky law forbade public hanging. Pike County authorities had erected a fence around the scaffold, but they circumvented the law by placing the structure at the base of a hill, from which crowds of curious people could obtain a clear view of the execution.

In the final episode when the McCoy family is ambushed in their home, a Phillip's head screw can be seen in the window frame where Randal McCoy is standing.
