‘Gold’ Review: Chintzy Storytelling Foils a Fun Matthew McConaughey Performance In Worthless Tale of Capitalism Gone Wild

30 December 2016 12:00 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

In 1993, a Filipino prospector named Michael de Guzman emerged from the jungles of Busang, Indonesia claiming to have found one of the largest gold deposits on record — he partnered with a Canadian conglomerate called Bre-x Minerals Ltd., and eventually took the fall for the most famous gold mining scandal of the late 20th century.

In 2011, screenwriters Patrick Massett and John Zinman (“Lara Croft: Tomb Raider”) decided to take the Bre-x story, arbitrarily transplant it to the late 1980s, and re-conceive it as a trite rise and fall parable about the seduction of the American Dream — the result, ultimately directed without distinction by Stephen Gaghan (“Syriana”), unfolds like a chintzy ripoff of David O. Russell ripping off Martin Scorsese ripping off real life, a movie that tries to sell us the most boring version of a story that has already been panned for all of its treasure and then some.

Hands Of Stone Review

27 August 2016 12:26 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Thanks to his role in Martin Scorsese’s immortal 1980 classic Raging Bull, Robert De Niro will forever be linked to the sport of boxing in the minds of moviegoers. For the last couple decades, the Oscar-winning actor has been heavily riffing on his past roles for comedic effect in releases like Analyze This, Meet the Parents and Grudge Match, all of which saw De Niro poke fun at his own tough-guy persona and the various archetypes he’s known for. Now he’s back in the world of boxing again – though with a decidedly more dramatic goal in mind – as a key supporting character in writer/director Jonathan Jakubowicz’s Hands of Stone.

The film stars Edgar Ramírez (Joy) as Panamanian boxer Roberto Durán, who rose to prominence in the early 1970s, but rather than focus solely on his rise and fall (and rise again), Hands of Stone also takes »

Hans Zimmer will craft the theme for Superman (Henry Cavill), like he did in 2013's Man of Steel, with Junkie Xl working on a new Batman (Ben Affleck) theme. Earlier today, Water Tower Music released the Batman theme, entitled "Men Are Still Good (The Batman Suite), which you can listen to below.

Before taking on the job, Hans Zimmer admitted in September 2013 that he was unsure about taking on this job, because he didn't want to create new Batman music after working on Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy. Director Ericson Core talks us through how he want about shooting his remake of Point Break...

As a cinematographer, Ericson Core filmed movies like The Fast and the Furious, Payback, and Daredevil. When he became a director on the true sports story Invincible, Core remained his own director of photography. So for his second film, Point Break, he was still the Dp. Point Break filmed in 11 different countries with athletes performing extreme stunts in the most extreme locations. Luke Bracy plays Johnny Utah, an FBI agent going undercover to root out an eco-terrorist. Bodhi (Edgar Ramirez) is still the leader of a group of athletes, but with more on their mind than robbing banks.

Here's how our chat with him about the film went....

Thank you for filming everything clearly so we could see all the stunts. As a Dp yourself, what are your thoughts on the »

Thn’s Top 5 Cinematographers Who Became Directors

4 February 2016 4:40 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

This week sees the release of the Point Break remake, which is directed by Ericson Core, cinematographer on the original Fast and the Furious movie, Payback, and Ben Affleck’s Daredevil. Core also handles the camera on the Point Break movie, which we reviewed earlier this week.

The film opens in cinemas from Friday, so to celebrate, we thought we’d take a look at the other top cinematographers turned directors.

So, let’s begin…

Ronald Neame – (Born 1911 – Died 2010)

Ronald Neame is a great place to start; the prolific filmmaker started life in 1929 working as an assistant with Alfred Hitchcock on Blackmail, and eventually worked as the cinematographer for forty-seven films starting with Happy (1933). His later works included One Of Our Aircraft Is Missing (1942) and Noel Coward’s In Which We Serve (1942). His final venture was another Coward-adapted play Blithe Spirit (1945), in which he worked with legendary director David Lean »
