On 9/11, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman (creator of "Maus") was in the immediate vicinity of Ground Zero, fleeing the crumbling World Trade Center with his family. He wrote In the Shadow of No Towers to illustrate the first-hand horror of that day, and the grief and disillusionment which followed. Inspired by Spiegelman's book, guitarist/composer Marco Cappelli transforms it into a multi-media production. Actor John Turturro, a quintessential New Yorker, narrates the English version (the original Italian version is also included with actor Enzo Salomone) accompanied by the music of Sintax Error, fusing modern classical, rock, jazz, country and cartoon music. The combination of all of these talents makes In the Shadow of No Towers a revelatory experience; its sorrow, confusion and rage all familiar to those who have followed the turmoil of the last ten years, but managing to surprise with its richness and variety of feeling. Why was this film made?
20 November 2011 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

This film consists of comic book images, narration of the comics, and a soundtrack. Except for the soundtrack (which is pretty good, actually), the film adds nothing to the experience of simply reading the comic book. The animation is still, and after a while becomes quite tiresome. The story itself consists of one man's experiences on the morning of 9/11 followed by his observations for several months after the event. His observations are not particularly insightful. Some of the comic book characters are his own creation, others are from comics from the early 1900's. A few images are repeated so often that I wonder if it was done for artistic effect or simply to expand the film to feature length. One of these drawn images is of a glowing world trade center tower immediately before it collapsed. The writer claims that this image (of a glowing tower) was never captured in any of the pictures taken on 9/11. Since the 9/11 disaster was one of the most filmed and photographed events in history, it is difficult to accept the writer's claim as literary true. It is likely his impression of how it appeared. The best I can say about this film is that it is an experiment which doesn't work.
