Storyline

On 9/11, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman (creator of "Maus") was in the immediate vicinity of Ground Zero, fleeing the crumbling World Trade Center with his family. He wrote In the Shadow of No Towers to illustrate the first-hand horror of that day, and the grief and disillusionment which followed. Inspired by Spiegelman's book, guitarist/composer Marco Cappelli transforms it into a multi-media production. Actor John Turturro, a quintessential New Yorker, narrates the English version (the original Italian version is also included with actor Enzo Salomone) accompanied by the music of Sintax Error, fusing modern classical, rock, jazz, country and cartoon music. The combination of all of these talents makes In the Shadow of No Towers a revelatory experience; its sorrow, confusion and rage all familiar to those who have followed the turmoil of the last ten years, but managing to surprise with its richness and variety of feeling. Spiegelman: First the Holocaust, Now 9/11
5 May 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Art Spiegelman's comic of the same title is animated and presented with narration and music.

I want to give this a good rating because I love Art Spiegelman, and it is hard to give a low rating to anything about 9/11. But, frankly, this just happens to be boring. Even with John Turturro narrating, there is absolutely nothing here that is an improvement on the comic itself. If anything, this is a step in the wrong direction. Maybe even the 4/10 is a little bit high.

Others have said the soundtrack is pretty decent, and I guess I would not disagree. But it is not enough that it makes the film worth watching... it is barely enough to keep someone from turning the film off. Even with less than an hour of running time, it tests viewers' patience.
