Very good indeed.

This is a very, very fine episode, very gritty, with some very harrowing content. I light of the conflict in Afghanistan, it raised some great arguments for and against. The mystery is very deep, but the solution rewarding.

A good back story for Vera, who's now suffering with angina, a really nice scene where her and Joe sit down to a salad.

Best part has to be where a troubled Budgie attacks Vera in panic, terrific performance from Alex Price.

It's a great introduction for Shep, and Claire Calbraith would happily soon return as a regular.

Superb production values, and the usual wonderful visuals, now guaranteed to feature Vera and Joe sat at a table enjoying a coffee.

Very very good. 8/10

Kenny

What's with Vera and Kenny. I swear she does not give that guy a break. I get that there is healthy banter in the work place but it feels like there is more going on there. Can she give him a break..ever. Poor guy just wanted to enjoy some breakfast in peace...haha

I hope Kenny and Vera's relationship will be explained further in coming episodes. She would definitely be a hard person to work for if you have low self esteem. Clearly Kenny can handle it. I understand why people call Joe teacher's pet....hahaha

Vera is a good detective but she needs to work on her people skills. And where did the new girl go? I guess Shep is her replacement.

The episode was decent.

Murder in the army
gridoon202423 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Vera and her team investigate the supposed suicide of a highly decorated soldier and quickly realize it was murder. The victim had just returned from a second term in Afghanistan, where his second-in-command was blown up by a land mine; the rest of his squad seem seriously affected by that incident and generally reluctant to co-operate with civilian police; a female military police officer becomes Vera and Joe's only real ally.

"Sandancers" does a good job of making an essentially simple tale of revenge seem far more complicated than it is, but on the whole it's a rather unremarkable mystery; despite the change of scenery, it feels formulaic. Acting is excellent as usual. **1/2 out of 4.

Very nice relatively straightforward episode

Warning: Spoilers
British expertise in binge drinking put to good use in the acting profession for the opening scene.

Pretty lame proof of murder but it gets better.

Episode 4 on IMDb, episode 3 on the DVD.

Vera is not flawed, she is real. Gruff, control freak, heart problems, loner, so much more interesting than drugs and alcohol or gambling as a weakness.

The mandatory cast notes so you can follow. At least your 12-year-old daughter does not need all 8 dry erase marker colors to sketch this one out on the 4'x8' whiteboard next to your recliner. Ollie-- blown up guy in Afghanistan. Staff Sergeant Deverson-- murdered guy staged as suicide. Laura-- delightfully brown wife with 1980's afro which turns to Jerri curls a few minutes into the episode. Hair later pulled back to add to your confusion. Shep-- the military gal and most nondescript white person in the universe flopping between bright red hat and civilian with flowing hair. Kevin/Budgie-- a nondescript white guy (NWG) drunk buddy plus a whole squadron of NWG including Vince, a suspect. Keith and Dianna-- NWG and gal are blown up Ollie's parents. Alex-- blown up Ollie's twin (really, confusion must reign).

Holly's replacement was a little too brown so she is gone. I guess we have Shep as NWG fluff babe on loan from the Royal Fusiliers. And she is nondescript. She could walk into my living room, pump 8 rounds into the 70-inch TVs, and I wouldn't be able to pick her from a line-up 10 minutes later. Pretty, smart, good actress, just nondescript. Would win Emmy for "Most hairstyles in a single episode" if there was such a category.

Lovely touch at end where medal turns up where Kevin/Budgie the false confession drunk buddy was when Vera's sidekick caught up with him-- yet Budgie said he never had the medal. Sidekick has expanded his range to have a two-day hipster growth beard instead of his former three-day growth. He's really mining the depths of the character.
