The project is comprised of several video studies exploring the concept of objective understanding and analysis; they were dedicated to the study of Man. The film was shot on Digital Video and edited on to VHS video through a VCR (video recorder) in order to acquire the specific effects i.e. signal interference, fast forwarding, slow motion, pausing, rewinding and other effects that could only be done in-camera and through video editing. The entire film was shot on three main locations in Brussels, Belgium 2000.
The original 10-minute version was lost, and Mensch was re-structured and re-edited into a new adapted version. Mensch: Prelude unlike the original, relied on several themes relating to the subject matter rather than wholly on the concept of study of Man. Instead of purely being an objective study it concentrated on Man's preoccupation with obsession, in relation to his surroundings, actions, thoughts, emotions etc. Developing a basic narrative revolving around the subject (Man) and his ambitions (dreams) and anxieties (fears) relating to his functional existence.
