Frankenstein Story, The (1958)
*** (out of 4)
Dr. Frankenstein, with the help of Ygor, brings the monster back to life but it doesn't take long for the hunchback to try and use the monster for his own evil deeds. This amateur movie from Don Glut is certainly going to appeal to those who enjoy the Universal monster movies and it's clear that Glut is a fan of them. There's no question that this is a nice little homage to those early movies as not only do we get bits from the original FRANKENSTEIN but we have mixed in some stuff from SON OF FRANKENSTEIN and we even get a few minor pieces from THE GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN. For the most part fans are really going to enjoy this movie because it's clear that Glut was having fun bringing these monsters back to life. He plays the Frankenstein monster and does a nice job with it and even Ygor is quite a bit of fun. Those who enjoy this film will want to watch the documentary about Glut because there are a few good stories told about various issues that happened while making this film including a hilarious bit about a softball that was being used for Ygor's hunchback. There's a nice sequence involving a ball that was clearly taken from THE GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN and we get another good sequence when Ygor is beaten to death. Just wait till you see where they beat him!
