Storyline

In Oxford, 1965, Endeavour Morse is a teetotaler and a classical music loving young constable who considers leaving the force after an unhappy affair but stays to join Inspector Thursday's investigation into the disappearance of schoolgirl Mary Tremlett. By deciphering a code based on crosswords in the local paper and Mary's poetry books, Morse deduces that Mary was meeting a lover and leads Thursday to the site of her murder. Following the suicide of Mary's boyfriend, student Miles Percival, Morse meets Miles' tutor, Dr. Stromming, the crossword setter who was seeing Mary but had an alibi for the murder. DS Lott, jealous of Thursday's regard for Morse's sharpness, attempts to incriminate Miles but then the police learn that Mary and other girls were paid to attend orgies by creepy car dealer Teddy Samuels, who has Lott in his pocket, as well as other worthies. As a result, both Thursday (a great mentor who also introduces the young constable to real ale) and Morse are carpeted. Morse... Written by don @ minifie-1

Trivia

The title of the first Endeavour film was revealed as "First Bus to Woodstock" by Damian Michael Barcroftin in an interview between him and Shaun Evans in his website, and later mentioned again in an interview with writer Russell Lewis. See more »

Goofs

When we first see Morse, he is typing a document. The camera shows a close-up of the page as he types the word "tender". The centre of each letter is fuzzy, as if the ribbon is being pressed onto the paper even by the hollows of the letters, and there is a ghost image of each letter, as if the type bars have bounced on the paper and made a second impression close to the first one. However when Morse then rolls the page a few inches out of the typewriter and we see the sentences that he has been typing, these blemishes are not present. See more »

In the end credits of the PBS Masterpiece Mystery! broadcast (though not the original ITV broadcast), some letters are shown in red... these spell out L-O-N-S-D-A-L-E, the name of a fictional Oxford college associated with Morse. See more »

A good insight into the uprising of Inspector Morse
2 January 2012 | by (London) – See all my reviews

Marking the 25th anniversary of the very first episode of Inspector Morse, Shaun Evans steps in to John Thaw's shoes to play the younger version of Colin Dexter's iconic character.

Set in 1965, the story follows the hunt for a missing schoolgirl which draws Endeavour Morse back to the place which will ultimately shape and define his destiny – Oxford.

Deep in a full-blown murder investigation and led by Detective Inspector Fred Thursday, Endeavour finds himself side-lined, discredited and at a dead end.

Will he risk it all in the hunt for a truth that could haunt him for the rest of his days?
