Storyline

In Oxford, 1965, Endeavour Morse is a teetotaler and a classical music loving young constable who considers leaving the force after an unhappy affair but stays to join Inspector Thursday's investigation into the disappearance of schoolgirl Mary Tremlett. By deciphering a code based on crosswords in the local paper and Mary's poetry books, Morse deduces that Mary was meeting a lover and leads Thursday to the site of her murder. Following the suicide of Mary's boyfriend, student Miles Percival, Morse meets Miles' tutor, Dr. Stromming, the crossword setter who was seeing Mary but had an alibi for the murder. DS Lott, jealous of Thursday's regard for Morse's sharpness, attempts to incriminate Miles but then the police learn that Mary and other girls were paid to attend orgies by creepy car dealer Teddy Samuels, who has Lott in his pocket, as well as other worthies. As a result, both Thursday (a great mentor who also introduces the young constable to real ale) and Morse are carpeted. Morse... Written by don @ minifie-1

Trivia

There is a close-up of a Zenith radio - a reference to the original series of Inspector Morse (1987), which was produced by a company called Zenith. See more »

Goofs

In the opening scene the announcer on the vet's radio is heard to say "Good morning, everyone. It's six o'clock on Sunday morning and the BBC Light Programme is beginning another day's broadcasting." This would not have been possible as the earliest Sunday broadcasting started in 1964-65 was 06:55 with 'The First Day of the Week'.

Later at the police station the vet says, in error, that he was listening to the Home Service. However even had he been correct it would have been no better as the Home Service of the period opened with 'Sunday Reading' at 07:50. See more »

Crazy Credits

In the end credits of the PBS Masterpiece Mystery! broadcast (though not the original ITV broadcast), some letters are shown in red... these spell out L-O-N-S-D-A-L-E, the name of a fictional Oxford college associated with Morse. See more »

A good insight into the uprising of Inspector Morse
2 January 2012 | by See all my reviews

Marking the 25th anniversary of the very first episode of Inspector Morse, Shaun Evans steps in to John Thaw's shoes to play the younger version of Colin Dexter's iconic character.

Set in 1965, the story follows the hunt for a missing schoolgirl which draws Endeavour Morse back to the place which will ultimately shape and define his destiny – Oxford.

Deep in a full-blown murder investigation and led by Detective Inspector Fred Thursday, Endeavour finds himself side-lined, discredited and at a dead end.

Will he risk it all in the hunt for a truth that could haunt him for the rest of his days?
