The Bloody two day battle of Shiloh in 1862 results in a total stalemate. Grant is replaced as head commander in the West by Henry Halleck and considers resignation from the army, but is talked into staying by his subordinate William Tecumseh Sherman. After Halleck's failed command attempt at the Siege of Corinth Mississippi., President Lincoln restores Grant to lead command in the Western Theatre of the war.Lee and McClellan face each other in the east at the Battle of South Mountain which culminates in the Bloodiest day in American history at Antietam. Confederate General John Brown Gordon is shot six times while leading his Confederate division at the Bloody Lane at Antietam. Lee retreats from Maryland temporarily. Relations between President Lincoln and McClellan become more and more strained. Grant moves on Vicksburg Mississippi but delays his actions by months due to the brilliant cavalry maneuvers of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest.The terrible battle of Fredricksburg Virginia occurs in the year resulting in a complete route of Union forces by Robert E Lee.
