Anne Hathaway was cast in the lead role but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts with her movie Song One (2014) and Interstellar (2014). She was replaced by Keira Knightley.
Shelley is a California Desert Tortoise. She was a class pet in a Seattle middle school at the time of filming.
Annika has a pet turtle named Lynn. According to Lynn Shelton on her director's commentary, this was in the original script and not a reference to her. The turtle's real name is Shelly, which also happens to be similar to the director's last name. It was originally a dog before being changed to a turtle for budgetary reasons.
Rebecca Hall turned down the lead role to star in Transcendence (2014).
This film is also known as "Say When" in some countries.

The trivia item below may give away important plot points.

The new baby getting saddled with a special name is initially going to be named Juppiter, with 2 Ps; the parents may not know it but in ancient Rome it was originally spelled that way (Iuppiter or Juppiter) before Jupiter became the standard. Additionally, never is it made clear what sex the baby is, but in theory Juppiter should be a boy's name, and the last-minute change to Callisto, explained by someone else's using the name first, could also be due in part to Callisto's being a girl's name.
