Plot Summary

  • Christy and Ignatiy introduce a 1979 episode of "Sneak Previews" in which Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel discuss surprise hit films which became influential by starting trends. "Airport" started the trend of disaster films which appealed to older viewers. "Easy Rider" started the trend of youth movies. "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song" started the trend of "angry black" films. "Jaws" started the trend of major thrillers released in the summer. "Vixen!" started the trend of sex-themed films appealing to Middle America. "Beyond and Back" started the trend of pseudo-documentaries with hard-sell television advertising campaigns, and "Five Fingers of Death" started the trend of karate films. At the end of the episode, Christy and Ignatiy mention some influential films of recent years.
