Box Office: ‘Alien: Covenant’ to Burst Into No. 1 Spot Over ‘Guardians 2’

Box Office: ‘Alien: Covenant’ to Burst Into No. 1 Spot Over ‘Guardians 2’
Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Covenant” should handily win the North American box office this weekend with about $42 million at 3,670 locations, early estimates showed Friday.

That’s more than enough to deny a third straight box office title to Disney-Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” which is heading for about $32 million at 4,347 sites. The tentpole sequel’s taking in about half of its gross from last weekend and should push “Guardians 2” to nearly $300 million by the end of this weekend — trailing only Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” among 2017 titles.

The launch of Warner Bros.-MGM’s teen romance “Everything, Everything” was performing somewhat above modest estimates with a projection of about $13 million at 2,850 sites. Fox’s debut of family comedy “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul” appeared to be in line with expectations with about $10 million at 3,157 venues. Fox’s second weekend of Amy Schumer-

Box Office: ‘Alien: Covenant’ Hatches $4.2 Million on Thursday Night

Box Office: ‘Alien: Covenant’ Hatches $4.2 Million on Thursday Night
Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Covenant” scared up $4.2 million domestically in Thursday night preview screenings.

The “Alien: Covenant” preview number is similar to Warner Bros.’ “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which opened on the same weekend in 2015 with $3.7 million on Thursday night on its way to a $45.4 million weekend. “Alien” held screenings at about 3,000 in North America.

Recent estimates have projected Fox’s R-rated horror-thriller to launch in the $40 million to $45 million range at 3,760 sites. That’s probably enough to deny Marvel-Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” a third consecutive victory as it heads for a weekend in the $35 million range. The Marvel-Disney sequel, still playing at 4,347 locations, has already taken in more that $265 million domestically in its first two weeks. It’s the second-biggest domestic grosser of 2017 and is nearing $650 million worldwide.

When the original Diary Of A Wimpy Kid movie first arrived in 2010, it would have been hard to conceive that it could become a four-film-spawning franchise that would still be kicking some seven years later. However, after a five-year dormancy, the series, based on the irreverent novels written and illustrated by Jeff Kinney, is set to relaunch with its fourth film entry Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul. 20th Century Fox has debuted the first teaser trailer and poster for Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, which is set to hit theaters on May 19. This trailer pokes some fun at the superhero genre, in its own unique way, teasing that none of the caped crusaders, galactic guardians or amazing web slingers over the past decade dared to be "wimpy" like the title character Greg, portrayed by Jason Drucker. This trailer gives fans a better look at the brand new cast that has been assembled for this fourth Wimpy Kid movie.

Back in November, 20th Century Fox unveiled a preview that gave fans a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at the new cast members, who replace all of the stars from the first three Wimpy Kid movies. Jason Drucker replaces Zachary Gordon as Greg, with Charlie Wright replacing Devon Bostick as his older brother Rodrick and Owen Asztalos replacing Robert Capron as Rowley.

Huevos: Little Rooster’s Egg-Cellent Adventure (Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos) movie review: a cock and balls story

Bad chicken-and-egg puns and indoctrination into animal cruelty as just good fun for everyone involved (including the animals). You know, for kids. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos translates into English as A Rooster with Many Eggs. Which doesn’t make any sense: roosters don’t have eggs or lay eggs; hens do that. But of course in Spanish, huevos is slang for “balls”… that is, testicles. So a fair transliteration of the title of this flick is A Rooster with Lots of Balls, or maybe just A Rooster with Balls. Which means that this CGI cartoon — in which the word huevos gets uttered a lot, and which features anthropomorphized eggs with arms and legs and faces and names — was intended to be one long dick joke. You know, for kids.

Review: 'Infinitely Polar Bear' Starring Mark Ruffalo & Zoe Saldana

With its based-on-the-director’s-life pedigree and stars Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana, "Infinitely Polar Bear" — horrible title aside — sounds like many Sundance films past and present: a family struggles with mental illness, trying to keep one person whole while also keeping — or failing to keep — the family together. And after writing such good-to-indifferent Hollywood product like "The Rocker," "Monsters vs. Aliens," and "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days," you can hardly fault writer-director Maya Forbes for trying to create something a little more substantive and a little less glib. And yet, even based on her experiences, "Infinitely Polar Bear" is so phony that you can imagine the production budget being made up of three-dollar bills; it treats severe mental illness as a series of quirky, fun-sy tics; the circumstances of its characters are tortuously contrived; and every child character seems not like a real, living child, but...
