Review: 'Infinitely Polar Bear' Starring Mark Ruffalo & Zoe Saldana

16 June 2015 3:27 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

With its based-on-the-director’s-life pedigree and stars Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana, "Infinitely Polar Bear" — horrible title aside — sounds like many Sundance films past and present: a family struggles with mental illness, trying to keep one person whole while also keeping — or failing to keep — the family together. And after writing such good-to-indifferent Hollywood product like "The Rocker," "Monsters vs. Aliens," and "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days," you can hardly fault writer-director Maya Forbes for trying to create something a little more substantive and a little less glib. And yet, even based on her experiences, "Infinitely Polar Bear" is so phony that you can imagine the production budget being made up of three-dollar bills; it treats severe mental illness as a series of quirky, fun-sy tics; the circumstances of its characters are tortuously contrived; and every child character seems not like a real, living child, but »

80’s Homage Slasher, Lost After Dark, Gets a Blu-Ray/DVD Release Date

27 May 2015 6:54 AM, PDT | Destroy the Brain | See recent Destroy the Brain news »

In true 80’s nostalgia fashion, I’ve been hyped about seeing this film since I’ve seen the poster. Yes, a poster sold me on the movie – just the way I grew up watching movies in the late 80’s & 90’s. Anchor Bay just announced the release date for the 80’s slasher homage, Lost After Dark.

If you thought the 80s were dead — think again! On September 1st, Anchor Bay Entertainment goes full 80s retro with Lost After Dark, a loving but harrowing homage that takes audiences back to the decade when slashers ruled the silver screen.  The exciting directing debut of writer/director Ian Kessner, Lost After Dark proudly features visceral, old-school prosthetic “kills,” and pop songs pulsing to an electronic beat. So thrown on a pair of acid wash jeans and go full-on tubular with Lost After Dark! Srp is $26.99 for the Blu-ray™ and $22.98 for the DVD, with pre-book on July 31st. »

'Infinitely Polar Bear' Trailer Starring Mark Ruffalo

13 March 2015 2:43 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Two of Marvel's biggest stars, Avengers: Age of Ultron's Mark Ruffalo and Guardians of the Galaxy's Zoe Saldana, come together for an indie that doesn't require extensive makeup or motion capture work, in the first trailer for Infinitely Polar Bear. The plot is set in the late 1970s, following a manic-depressive mess of a father (Mark Ruffalo), who tries to win back his wife (Zoe Saldana) by attempting to take full responsibility of their two young, spirited daughters, who don't make the overwhelming task any easier.

Infinitely Polar Bear debuted at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it was met with critical acclaim and eventually picked up by Sony Pictures Classics. Maya Forbes wrote the screenplay and makes her directorial debut, after writing movies such as Seeing Other People, The Rocker, Monsters Vs. Aliens, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days and the upcoming Trolls. Bad Robot's J.J. Abrams »

Exclusive: Shoot underway in South Africa on Chris Smith thriller.

Emory Cohen (The Place Beyond the Pines, The Gambler) has joined Tye Sheridan (Mud, Joe) and Bel Powley (The Diary of A Teenage Girl) in the cast of writer-director Chris Smith’s (Get Santa) thriller Detour, which is now underway in South Africa.

Supporting cast on the film includes True Blood’s Stephen Moyer and newcomer Jared Abrahamson (Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days).
