Storyline

Christy and Ignatiy introduce a 1979 episode of "Sneak Previews" in which Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel discuss the movies of 1978. Roger and Gene note that the year's biggest hits focused on escapism and lightheartedness, such as "Grease" and "Animal House." Gene expresses concern that escapist films may wind up crowding out serious films entirely. The critics name their personal choices for the year's best films: for Roger, "An Unmarried Woman" and "Days of Heaven," and for Gene, "Straight Time" and "Autumn Sonata." They also name their worst films of 1978, both of which coincidentally starred Richard Burton: "The Medusa Touch" for Roger and "The Wild Geese" for Gene. Afterwards, Christy and Ignatiy note that despite the dominance of blockbuster films, new methods of distribution such as Netflix and streaming video have made smaller films more accessible to the public than they were in 1978.
