"The Smurfs 3" was planned for a 2015 release. However, due to this film's underwhelming box office performance and the death of Jonathan Winters, the idea of another sequel was scrapped in favor of developing Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017), a completely animated reboot.

Brainy Smurf and Gutsy Smurf were reduced to recurring characters for the film, staying behind to watch the village, and ultimately giving Vanity the spotlight.
The soap from the bubbly sink scene is called "Bleua La Lune". This is translated to "The Blue Moon" which can be a reference to the first movie.

Papa Smurf is called Santa several times in the film. In addition to joking on the physical similarities between Papa and Santa, this running gag refers to how Jonathan Winters portrayed Santa in both Santa vs. the Snowman (1997) and Santa vs. the Snowman 3D (2002).
