  • A man stares at a woman's clothed breasts as she talks to him. The scene lasts for less than a minute. No nudity is seen.

Violence & Gore

  • 8/10
  • Despite over 75% of the series being fairly tame in terms of violence and gore, the last few episodes can be extremely gory, and often times unsettling to watch.
  • The entire premise of the show is how a small town starts to get overrun by "Shiki", more commonly known as Vampires. Many scenes depict people getting bitten by the Shiki.
  • The first episode contains decomposing corpses, with a few blood splatters on the floor, as well as maggots infesting in their wrinkled up, decaying skin.
  • One of the character tells a story to another character about a boy who murders his brother. Not graphic, but a bit of blood can be seen in the vision.

Profanity

  • 3/10
  • Words such as ass, dumbass, damn, bastard, and other less-harsh words are used non-frequently throughout the series. A fairly low amount for a TV-MA series.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • 3/10
  • Some of the characters smoke and drink every now and then.
  • One character gets drunk. His drunk ramblings are only shown for a minute.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • 8/10
  • As stated in the Violence and Gore category, the entire premise of the show is how a small town starts to get overrun by "Shiki", more commonly known as Vampires. Many scenes depict people getting bitten by the Shiki.
  • The Shiki's appearances can often be unsettling. Most of them are portrayed with pale skin, eyes with red pupils and black scleras, and sharp fangs. A few of them have nothing but empty sockets. Sometimes their eyes glow red when they're hiding in the darkness.
  • The bodies of dead people are sometimes seen decaying. The bodies are often very detailed. Some show skin literally falling off the bone, as well as having maggots swarm inside them.
  • Overall, 25/40. Recommended for ages 15+.
  • Rated R for Strong Bloody Violence, Mild Language, Mild Sexual Themes, and some Tobacco/Alcohol use.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • During the final few episodes of the series, the citizens that reside in the town find out about the Shiki killing off their people and turning them into monsters. They find this out when Ozaki and others tie down Chizuru and drives a stake into her heart multiple times. They all agree to start killing off every Shiki they can find to free their town. These episodes contain graphic violence, blood and gore, and can be extremely unsettling to watch.
  • In the last few episodes, the townspeople stake, slice, shoot, run over, and burn Shiki all over the vilalge.
  • In the last episode, Megumi has her head run over by a tractor. Her body is seen struggling beneath it, before some villagers kill her.
  • Many favorite characters end up dying, some in brutal ways.
  • There are no good or bad people in this series. Morals are very low. Even though everyone thinks that all their solutions can be solved by killing off one another, no one gets out unscathed.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The second half of the series is very disturbing. The second half contains many deaths, from both the human and the Shiki side.
  • Ozaki's wife becomes a Shiki, and when she comes back, he straps her onto a table and starts dissecting her to find out what can kill a Shiki. He injects her with needles, cuts open multiple parts of her body, and then stabs her in the heart with a stake. Most are scene on-screen. Very upsetting, as this was an emotional death in the series.
  • The lynching of all the Shiki is both disturbing and emotional. Many favorite characters are killed in brutal ways.
  • In the end of the series, a woman who lost her entire family goes up to a residence located in the mountain and lights herself on fire, setting everything on fire as well. The entire village burns down.
