Fred's Descendants & Legacy
redryan6414 May 2015
HAVING WATCHED OUR own children (Jenn & Michelle) growing up with the fine influence of Fred Rogers with his MISTER ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD, we were really happy to see that the show and Mr. Rodgers himself have left us an heir to his program. It is a tangible example of his legacy.

THE CHARACTERS PORTRAYED are taken right from the old "Neighborhood of Make Believe". That includes the starring title character, Daniel Tiger. In the previous incarnation, the characters were either live performing actors or some hand puppets. Included are messenger man Mr. McFeely, Lady Elaine, Chef Brockett, King Friday XIII (now with some sons) and some others.

INSTEAD OF THE previously employed medium of the puppet/live actor combo, the entire show is rendered in the modern, computer generated animation. The colors are bright, the lighting bright, the ambiance most cheerful and the artwork (both in backgrounds and character design) outstanding.

AS WITH ALL worthwhile series, there is plenty of socially redeeming content. The mixture of characters paves the way for the acceptance of others in the minds of the impressionable young.

ONE PARTICULAR ASPECT of the series that we must mention is the way that the outstanding talents of Fred Rogers as a communicator are not forgotten. In many scenes, a close-up of Daniel is employed when he is either imparting some very important info or when asking a question of the very youthful viewer. This latter is finely done, rendering this series to be an interactive program.

THIS LAST ELEMENT is the greatest legacy of MISTER ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD; as well as that of the entire Public Broadcasting System, itself.

Daniel Tiger IS a great program...
phishstix-6948419 July 2016
Without a doubt it's a great program it's what sesame street used to be with lots of music and memorable jingles to help kids learn. From potty training, to dealing with anger, to dealing with feelings arising with a newborn on the way, Daniel Tiger tackles a lot of things other newer shows don't reach. There's even a show about voting and what it is for. This show is worth watching especially if your child likes music. My youngest loves the music and jingles she often dances to the music.

I urge any parent with an upcoming doctor's appointment to watch the episode where Daniel Tiger has to get a shot. It might ease anxiety for your child when going to the doctor and for parents too.

If your potty training your child I urge you to watch the episodes about going potty and repeating jingles about using the bathroom. It worked for my oldest daughter maybe it can work for your child too.

The tantrums episode wasn't a good show, but it should not discourage you from watching the other almost 60 episodes available to watch. Netflix dropped it recently, why I have no idea, but you can view all episodes via YouTube, PBS kids and Amazon. Daniel Tiger Is Great Program!

An amazing show for your little ones
seccle129 January 2015
I've never written a review on here before and the only reason I am now is b/c another person wrote a horrible review about this show.... first I would like to say, that person obviously does not have children. Second, they didn't watch the show from a learning perspective. Third, they watched Mister Rogers around the end.... so that tells you their age.

This show is something that Mister Rogers would be proud of, it defiantly takes on the values and ideals that he wanted to share with children all over the world. And there are a lot of pieces of the show that come from Mister Rogers' neighborhood.

My daughter loves Daniel and all his friends. We watch this show every morning and through out the day. This show helps children to learn who to handle their emotions, like jealousy and anger, and as a mother of a toddler... this is great! Along with talking about emotions, the show has catchy songs that help you over come your emotions.

There are episodes about potty training, getting a new sibling, jealously from that new sibling, going to the doctor, starting school, trying new foods, safety, etc.

My husband and I grew up watching Mister Rogers, and we don't mind the changes... shows have to adapt to whats currently out there and technology has changed so much since Mister Rogers first aired in 1968, or even when it was on in the 80's & 90's when I watched it. And honestly, if this was a show like how Mister Rogers was, I don't think a lot of children would like it as much as they do now, with it being a cartoon. Children can relate to the characters; Daniel, O, and Katarina and are learning through their experiences.

Basically, this is a greats show and you don't need cable to watch it! its on PBS!! Or if you have Netflix, Hulu or Amazon you can find it there too.

Great for pre-school set
valstavey7 June 2014
My 2-year old grandson LOVES this show! He is rarely still but will sit through entire episodes of Daniel Tiger, responding to questions, singing along, and giving me "Ugga- mugga" kisses. He even has a "Tigey" he sleeps with. This morning we watched the crayon factory episode and when the characters received their yellow crayons from Lady Elaine, he jumped up to get his. My daughter didn't understand why there are such short random songs thrown in, so I had her watch Mr. Rogers on YouTube to show her that he did the same thing. The brevity and repetition of two-line songs of encouragement or learning are wonderful mechanisms by which children can remember. They aren't always very tuneful, but they are perfect for our 2-yr. old. And after all, he is the target audience, not those of us who watched and loved Mr. Rogers on his original show. I find this pseudo- reincarnation delightful and filled with learning opportunities for young children.

Great show for toddlers
pooja2824 June 2014
As a mother of a toddler who loves this show, I have to write a good review for it. The shows (and the songs) have helped her learn to use the potty and to share. Yes, that's right, my daughter was potty trained by 2 and I credit this show, in part. There are lots of great lesson that have helped her navigate life and play with friends. And as she grows older, we revisit shows that have lessons relevant to her life. I don't mind watching the shows repeatedly too. The songs do stick in your head, but now we make up our own songs for all sorts of things.

I grew up watching Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, but my memory of it is fuzzy. So, I am not upset about the changes.

Our son LOVES this show!!!
cpshultz868 November 2014
This is our son's favorite show, and the only one that will hold his attention for more than 12 seconds! He got a Daniel Tiger for his 1st Birthday and I was so glad to have found it, Daniel is his "best friend!". I love the little songs that have more meaning than rhyme and the lessons in the show along with the story lines. I loved Mr. Rogers neighborhood as a kid, and although this is a very different, more modern show, I am pleased to see the good moral underlining and joy that this show brings to him while still keeping true to the same themes. PLEASE KEEP MAKING SEASONS!!! Nothing else holds a candle to this in our baby's eyes and I can feel good as a mom about what he's watching and learning. I really love seeing something of quality in children's T.V. and this certainly fits the bill.

Unlike other kid shows, I don't like this one, why?
ho-9704922 September 2021
Well, basically because every time Daniel gets angry, it makes me pretty uncomfortable because it's a bit scary and annoying.

Daniel Gets a Cold is probably my favorite episode because of its plot and Daniel not being angry and yeah, that's all.

The Best, or really?
yggfan10 April 2020
When I first saw the title character of "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood", my initial reaction was "Aw, what a cute little tiger.", but then I saw that it was going to be shown on PBS Kids, and that's when I started fearing for the worst. I feared that PBS (and its stations) would just make a total mess of it, just like they had done with Super WHY!, Between the Lions, Barney & Friends, and FETCH! with Ruff Ruffman. But I'm delighted to tell you, that they haven't messed it up at all. It's just simply sweet.

"Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood" is the story about the little titular tiger cub who goes to preschool (with a cat, an owl, a prince, and a little girl) and plays at his house (usually with his baby sister). Throughout the show, life lessons are taught about sharing, cooperation, telling the truth, trying new foods, potty training, and respect for others - with the use of simple ditties. During each episode Daniel makes believe different things (swimming, superheroes, dancing cakes) and at the end live-action segments featuring real kids doing an activity related to the show's theme (similar to most modern PBS Kids shows).

All of this I've just written is one of the things that makes "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood" so special for a PBS Kids show, namely the fact that it teaches useful social skills lessons in each episode. Yes, you heard right, social skills. And that's one of the many things I like about this show. One other thing I like about this show, is the fact that the show has no perpetual smiley characters. There aren't any high fast-paced jolts. The show doesn't use cheesy CGI, and that's terrific. And Daniel wears a pretty red sweater and shoes, but those superficial trinkets are not what this story is about. It's about the fact that people of any age that it's OK to be who they are, and that's a wonderful message.

The characters are by far the best part of this show. Daniel is cute and adorable, but he's not a Barney or Dora type of character. He's not stupid and happy all the time, he's not annoying, but most of all, he's not singsongy syrupy-voiced when he speaks. Mom Tiger is the most lovely mother I've seen in a PBS show for quite some time, next after Jane Read in "Arthur". Dad Tiger is a great father for Daniel. He's also gotten a baby sister, Margaret, in the 2014 season. Margaret (who shares her name with my Mom) is fun loving but is always crying. She and Daniel get along very well, and they stand up to each other, like brother and sister. Then there is Teacher Harriet, who can seem strict at times, since her job is being a teacher of-course, but she's also a good friend when you need one. Oh, and this show is inspired by the classic PBS show "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" (which I actually hate). It has the same trolley, same theme song, and same social-emotional curriculum.

The music in this show is truly wonderful, with songs that really feels like they come from the good old days of PBS when it was just the aforementioned MRN, Captain Kangaroo, the Electric Company, Sesame Street, and of course ZOOM 1972, just like it should be. The animation is okay, it's not that revolutionary, in terms of the technology. But hey, since when has feature film quality animation been necessary in order to tell a great story?

In conclusion, what "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood" is, is an extraordinary wonderful and triumphant return to the PBS children's shows of the 70s. And that's something I feared we would never get the chance to see again. At least not for the days of NET (National Educational Television) or so. While this show isn't exactly contributing anything to the technological development of the art of animation, it does what no other modern PBS show has succeeded in doing for many years, namely truly return PBS to its origins in children's TV. Lovable characters, a great plot, and wonderful music are the main reason why I feel that PBS should use this show as their main template for how to produce their animated TV series. And if they don't do it, then I will sue them. That's how good this show is. With more shows like this, PBS' future would be safe.

Lots of potential, BAD execution
dtnmusic18 March 2020
I'm not a bot, I'm a super cool parent... About once a week we give our 3 year old boy time to watch this show. Unfortunately every time it ends he is in a horrible, non negotiable mood, and imitating the overly dramatic and bad tempered/mannered characters. He likes the show and we have tried but we are done. I'm writing this as a warning to parents. Our boy is well behaved/mannered/happy etc but once he sees this show he completely flips. There is no need to make the characters so whiny and so outspoken. The messages are great but lost in the drama that precedes it. Not worth it! We're doing fine teaching our kids and plenty of other shows are much better. Try: Sesame street, Super why, Clifford the dog.

Best Show PBS Kids has these days!
danieltigerthomasfan23 April 2022
This has to be one of the best shows I've ever seen! It blows my mind how clever it was how they did this, adapting a classic show and turning it into something dare I say, even better. It blows my mind how cleverly they did it.

Positives; 1. Stunning, and adorable Animation 2. Great characters!

3. cute morals 4. My Favorite PBS Kids Character (Katerina Kittycat) 5. Adorable scenes 6. Great voice acting

However there are a few plot holes

Flaws/Plot Holes; 1. WHY DOES CHRISSE HAVE NO PARENTS!?!?!?

2. WHERE ARE MAX AND AMIRA'S PARENTS?!?!?!

3. I Agree with the general public saying that Daniel Should Wear Pants 4. A little obnoxious at times admittedly

Overall: 10/10 despite those nitpicks.

Not suitable for child rearing
isaacandmary18 May 2016
Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood has very few redeeming qualities. It encourages children to work together, and teaches them that they are all the same even if they have physical differences. These lessons are commendable.

However, this program encourages children to throw temper-tantrums. The parents always maintain an understanding demeanor as the child has fits concerning anything that does not go their way. By reasoning and compassion, the hissy-fit subsides and the child returns to a calm stance. This is completely unrealistic because an adult cannot reason with a child. A child is incapable of understanding adult principles. They have the mind of a child.

This is one reason why the world is so violent and ungodly today. Parents allow children to do, say and go, whatever, whenever and wherever they want. No discipline is instilled and the child grows up believing the world was made to accommodate their desires.

Thankfully my parents did not raise me in this fashion. The manner in which the parents and children behave and interact on this show is like a parallel universe when compared to the way I was raised. My children will not be watching this show.

A perversion of the original Mister Rogers
Tornado_Sam1 June 2019
The title of this review may be misleading, so before you jump to conclusions that I'm hating on this show, let me say I will be fair as to the good aspects of this show and the bad ones. First of all, let me say one thing: "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood" is at least harmless. PBS has a history of making some of the stupidest shows in history, such as "Teletubbies" (which is just a perverse idea to begin with) and "Peppa Pig" (which is somewhat harmless but lacks any real educational content). DTN is a fairly harmless show for kids to see, and it does contain an certain amount of charm for toddlers and preschoolers, which are the target audience. (I haven't seen enough to fully judge the show, so there may be something to the other reviewers' claims that the kids in the show throw temper tantrums). From what I've seen, though, the show has nothing immoral kids shouldn't be exposed to.

However, the big fault of the show comes right in the title. To be frank, poor Fred must be turning in his grave seeing how some people took his wonderful show and created a cartoon out of the characters in Make-Believe with hardly any actual connection to his original characters. New characters are thrown in, some are removed, and the show is lacking in any real homage to "Mister Roger's Neighborhood". To take the beloved characters I and others grew up seeing and cartoon-ize them seems just wrong. They might as well have made no reference to Daniel Striped Tiger at all and just made the main character a bear or something else. Also, the fact that this show does still have some of the Make-Believe characters in it will cause kids to miss the references to Mister Rogers and say, "Der, Mister Rogers' Neighorbood? What's that? I don't even know since I grew up with good old Danny!"

In conclusion, harmless but a perversion of a great classic. I suggest you show your kids the original show, however, as that show teaches actual m orals and is a good influence. "Daniel Tiger's Niehgborhood", to me, seems only like mild entertainment for a child, nothing more.

Great show with some quirks.
kelani13 November 2023
I'm just an old fan of Mr. Rogers, so I wanted to see how his legacy was being cared for, and I think the show does a very nice job. Far better then other kids' shows. Nothing could ever equal Fred Rogers, but at least the lessons and empathy he taught us are still being taught here.

The characters are adorable; they all have their own stories and personality quirks. Every kid can find at least one character to identify with. The show is also extremely inclusive. Race, disability, adversity, different guardians/home life, and other topics are handled delicately and instructively. Santomero has done a wonderful job coordinating with experts to send the right messages in a way kids can understand.

The Daniel imagination sequences are fun to watch. (I wish I'd had this when I was a kid!). Some of the songs are so good they should be award-winning, but a few are kind of bad. It's difficult to create rhyming lyrics for the vocabulary of a four-year-old, so they tend to recycle a lot of lyrics across episodes that don't make much sense in context. But to be fair, so does every other musical kids' show, and I doubt the kids really notice. But the best part is that every lesson has a memorable tune, which a lot of parents sing to their children to remind them; ex: "Grown-ups come back". That's a great thing. And when they get it right, some of the harmonies are just beautiful.

Some people don't like that the show occasionally shows the kids getting mad. But I think that's a good thing. They are allowed to feel their feelings, and then learn how to redirect that anger into something better..

Annoyances? Not many. One thing that bugs me is when they have Tigey sing. He has this tinny/creepy electronic voice that just sounds terrible. PBS also tends to show episodes back to back with a different Prince Wednesday actor who sounds very different, which might be confusing. Also, some of the adults also occasionally come off as a bit 1950s sanctimonious, but I guess that's necessary for the format.

All in all, a wonderful show.

Great show for kids and grownups alike!
opalpika132817 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood is a spin off of Mister Roger's Neighborhood It covers the Land of Make Believe, where Daniel Tiger and his family and friends live. Like Mister Roger's Neighborhood, Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood tells great lessons that kids can follow and relate to. The episodes which are 2 stories based on one topic, and sometimes a whole special episode (such as one covering Winter, Visiting a New Neighborhood, and even one that covered staying inside due to a pandemic like what everyone had to do during the COVID-19 pandemic). For example, there was one that covered being sick, first was when Daniel catches a cold and had to go home early from school, missing his friend Prince Wednesdays birthday party, with the other having Mom Tiger being sick. And usually with these topics, there's a song that goes with it, for the "Sick" episodes, it's "When you're sick, rest is best". Another set deals with learning about what you can learn about doing something new, there's actually 3 episodes and sets that does this one, from visiting the doctors for the first time, Visiting the dentist, and starting school for the first time, with the song "When we do something new, let's talk about what we'll do". Yeah there are also times where Daniel does get mad, upset, etc but it does get corrected and learns from it with songs such as not wanting to do something and to calm down, being frustrated, and calming down from feeling mad. It's such a good show for kids, and grownups, also grownups that grew up watching Mister Roger's Neighborhood, for it has a similar feel like that show, with very good lessons everyone can learn from.

So this exists..... Are you insane?!
razersharkfins28 May 2014
When I first heard of this show i was skeptical at first, but trying to sit through one episode was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. Even going through the opening theme, I could tell that I was heading for torture. It's mind numbing and made my eyes sting. Back when the show was new, I could tell it wasn't going to be great, but THIS, this is one of the worst children's shows ever. A lot of the puppet citizens of Make believe were only kids in Mister Roger's Neighborhood. Ten years after the show ended, everyone who we knew are now adults! How does that work?! Also, the way these characters look, which is supposed to be charming and cute, they creep me out. Along with that, a lot of the writing is also dumb, "grr-ific!" apparently that's what the writers think is clever, so they're obnoxiously putting it in episodes just to see hardly anyone laugh at it. This MIGHT be okay for kids at around 5, but for those who grew up with Mister Rogers, can feel their childhood being brutally crushed! That's how i feel about this show, If Mister Rogers was still alive today to see this show, THIS would probably end up killing him anyway. I'm surprised to see this got over 5 in rating. Plain and simple, this is awful. And I hope it ends soon. If I ever have children, I'll make sure to keep them away from this show by any means necessary and instead give them The Original "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood," It's classic and MUCH more quality filled

Meet the new "Caillou"
paulym-8440621 August 2017
This show is by FAR one of the worst "educational" shows of all time. Now, just because a show is educational and rated TV- Y, doesn't mean it's instantly bad. Examples: Blues Clues The Upside- Down Show MLP: Friendship is Magic Arthur Odd Squad Nature Cat And more. But this is awful... It just might be the worst PBS cartoon running today. The animation looks like it was done be one person in ten minutes. It's comparable to "It's The Nutshack" in animation. No, it's WORSE. "It's The Nutshack" doesn't copy and paste live-action pictures into their animation. The voice acting and writing are egregiously bad. Almost as bad as "Super Why." And just the ignorance of the original "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood" is offensive. They take 100% of the charm out of it. This was even made by the fricking Fred Rogers Company, where "The legacy goes on". Yeah, legacy of making cartoons just for 💰. I hate this show. P.S. The Fred Rogers Company isn't a bad company. They made Odd Squad and Nature Cat, two of my favorite PBS Kids shows. Here is my final word: Do not watch this. It's cruel and unethical torture.
