In its nineteenth year, the Slamdance Film Festival appears to be pulling out all the stops, thanks to their recent announcement of a very impressive slate of Special Screenings and their all-new Slam Collective, launching at January’s fest. The list of Special Screenings includes a film that may very well be one of Slamdance’s most impressive bits of programming ever, the World Premiere of Philippe Caland‘s Vipaka,a mysterious project about karma with a cast that includes Forest Whitaker, Anthony Mackie, Mike Epps, and Sanaa Lathan. The Butler may cast Forest Whitaker and David Oyelowo as his son. Forest Whitaker and David Oyelowo are both currently in negotiations for the Lee Daniels (Precious) film based on Wil Haygood's Washington Post story, reports Variety. They would join Oprah Winfrey who is in early discussions to join as the wife in the drama scripted by Daniels and Danny Strong. Wil Haygood's story focuses on White House servant Eugene Allen, following a butler who served at the White House under eight presidents, starting in 1952 until 1986. Producing is Hilary Shor, along with Laura Ziskin Productions Pamela Williams. Denzel Washington was originally attached to star in The Butler with Sony distributing, but this didn't materialize. Seeing the name Anthony Mackie in the opening credits is fast becoming a reassuring sign. Not necessarily of the quality of a movie -- we can't say we adored "Real Steel" or "What's Your Number" exactly -- but an indication that at least one good performance will take place over the course of the running time. Since breaking out two years back in "The Hurt Locker," Mackie has become one of the most in-demand actors around, and he's set to appear in dramedy "Ten Year," biopic "Bolden!," horrror "Vipaka," summer tentpole "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" and starry drama "Gangster Squad" before the year is out. But first, opening this week, is the thriller "Man On A Ledge," in which Mackie plays the ex-partner and best friend of Sam Worthington's disgraced cop, a man planning a spectacular revenge on the financier (Ed Harris) who framed him.
