An elderly woman is murdered in a wood by a man she saw setting fire to swans. He buries her corpse with a bible annotating the book of Revelations and from his finger-prints he is identified as Jannek Langas, a religious maniac and arsonist. He has escaped from a secure unit but nonetheless has a healthy bank account in an assumed name. At the same time Anna, a friend of Linda, disappears after a cryptic visit to Wallander. Following Langas's suicide by immolation Wallander learns that Langas and Anna belonged to the same, fundamentalist Christian group and that other members are dying. Wallander must discover who is behind the killings and whether Anna is accomplice or victim - or even alive.
Wallander and his team investigate the disappearance of woman. He finds her remains in a shallow grave where her body had been set alight. Forensic evidence points to an escaped mental patient and religious fanatic, Jannek Langas, who was also a pyromaniac. Wallander is also visited by Anna Westin, a friend of his daughter Linda. She's obviously distraught but reveals little. Unable to contact her, Linda joins her father in trying to locate her. What they learn is that Anna and Langas were both members of the same fundamentalist church. The two cases are now connected and a second death adds some urgency to their investigation. Meanwhile, Wallander rejoices at the news that he's going to be a granddad.
