Quotes

Cake: [whispering to Fionna] Psst! Fi! Tell Gumball that you think he's hot!
Fionna: [also whispering] What? No!
Cake: Guys like to hear that they're hot!
Fionna: Will you keep your voice down?
Prince Gumball: Oh, Fionna!
Fionna: [aloud, trying to sound casual] Heyyy, wassup?
Prince Gumball: I thought we might have a little race. A playful race, to Marshmellow-y Mweadows!
Fionna: Okay, but I'm gonna kick your butt! Not that I'm thinking of butts...
Prince Gumball: Excellent. HI-YA!

Clever spin

Take a cursory look at 'Fionna and Cake' and it's just a simple gender-swap episode - which, at present, feels like it's been done to death. But this is one of my very favorite episodes, partly because it's so well constructed, and also because of the voice cast. Madeleine Martin makes Fionna an endearing character; same for Roz Ryan as Cake (and I'm not even a cat person). And it's topped off with a meta ending that's very clever. It just works in every sense.

As soon as I saw this for the first time, I wanted more Fionna and Cake

  • which is why we only get one every so often. As good as this is, it's

still a gimmick, and its welcome should never be worn out.

But damn, gimmicks are rarely this good.
