Trivia

Toward the end of this movie Jesse Stone looks at his wrist watch. It's a close up shot and he's wearing a silver Rolex. The circumference of the watch is half red and half blue, with even numbers displayed 2 through 24. It's the same watch Tom Selleck wore in Magnum P.I. that originally belonged to his characters father. It can be seen in great detail in the fourth season episode "Home from the Sea" and throughout the Magnum seasons. See more »

Tom Selleck returns as the police chief of Paradise
1 September 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Benefit of the Doubt" (2012) has Jesse Stone (Tom Selleck) returning to Paradise to solve the case of a double murder (of the chief and deputy) by an improvised explosive device, certainly a signature killing if there ever was one. The attractions of the movie are similar to the earlier entries, all of which I've reviewed some time back. Selleck is excellent in the part. His dog makes for a good character. William Devane and Saul Rubinek liven up the proceedings considerably. Robert Carradine lifts the story too. Gloria Reuben's character is almost as downbeat as Jesse.

Personally, I found this film less satisfying and more annoying. It's too smug. It's too stuck on itself. It too self-consciously uses dialog gimmicks that involve repetition. It repeats the title too many times. The story-telling is, if anything, even slower, almost too slow. The detective work is nothing special.

Fans of the Jesse Stone movies will be glad to take this in. I liked it well enough, but objectively this is an average story and film. What carries it is mainly the presence of Selleck and his character. I'm reminded of how James Garner lifted "The Rockford Files". The setting is nice, even if Nova Scotia is sitting in for the Massachusetts North Shore. As I suggested in an earlier review, the danger is for these films to fall into formula, and this one stays close to it. I look forward to the next one.
