Promising start for a not-so-fresh series idea, 24 August 2011

*** This review may contain spoilers ***

Yet another clever quirky story of the smart but over-looked girl in high school. This feels like *The Life and Times of R.J.Berger* as told by Betty Friedan.

This one has promise and yet has some problems. The over-the-top guidance counselor is funny at times but is also painful to watch most of the time. In her better moments she's cringe-worthy... at worst she's "OMG where's the fast forward on this thing" The crush interest Matty is good so far and his best friend (Mr. Sensitive who seems to have the hots for Jenna) is intriguing. The parents are right out of R.J Berger and not too annoying so far.

I also loved the hidden 'look how far we've come' moment when the camera panned the lovers at the dumpsters in episode 4 and a gay couple was included matter of factly.

This one has some smart writers... Now if MTV could just get this quality of writing into teen wolf while keeping the eye candy quotient high we'd have two eminently watchable teen series on MTV.
