A Lot Going On
GunnersMate6 June 2018
Smarter Carter is a very full episode with several plots intertwining and all striving to take the center spotlight.. The first is the titular storyline, that of Jack suddenly becoming exponentially smarter. Ferguson's growingly brilliant Carter suddenly fits in with the geniuses of Eureka and he is very very funny even as the situation also provides the crisis of the week. This is paired with the visit of Allison's arrogant also-genius brother, stopping in Eureka on a book tour and to check out the law enforcement everyman that his sister married. It is a nice companion plot which gives Allison's backstory a more human feel and adds both conflict and humor to the episode. The third major element of this offering continues the virtual Holly season-arc. Holly is restless living as an appendage to SARAH and wants to risk losing her matrix construct if it means a chance for freedom and a "normal" life. Plenty of ramped up sci-fi to mine from this plot and it is pretty clear that continuation into the season is the primary purpose of the plot element (as it only lightly melds with the first two storylines). All in all,, a busy, entertaining episode with a lot going on.

Expected More

Warning: Spoilers
As a big Eureka fan, I was looking forward to this episode as Colin Ferguson was quoted in saying it was one of his favourites. However, it's like they tried to cram as much as possible into this episode and made it jumpy, out of sorts and not the high level of entertainment that was expected from this episode.

The story line with Holly while a central focus for the season shouldn't have taken such a predominant position in the episode.

There was actually very little focus on Jack Carter in the episode and so much more could have been done in this episode, all Eureka fans were waiting for when Jack could turn the tables on the genii in the town expect for a couple of good lines, "It turns out that it's not that hard", as said to his new bride Allison.

However overall, a good episode with the right themes in it, just could have been written better.
