- What starts as a controlled interview takes a turn for the worse, ending in a full-on brawl. The beef continues even after the guys survive a harrowing scenario at a call.
- "Brownies" (August 3, 2011)
The guys from 62 Truck watch the report on 9/11, in which Tommy is prominently featured. They show him citing the 343 figure of firefighter dead, and Tommy saying it's also the greatest rescue in the history of the New York Fire Department.
Tommy says Jimmy was a great hero and explains that after rescuing people from one of the towers, he then went into the other tower to help there. Sheila is shown saying she's comforted knowing he died helping people.
"So far so good," Needles says.
The report moves on to Damian, and shows him in the chair. Tommy says he's blames himself for what happened to Damian, but not what happened to Jimmy.
We see the reporter ask him what would have been a happy ending to that story. Tommy says everybody dies.
She says that day made FDNY firefighters known for being heroes. Tommy says they don't need a spotlight, they're just doing their jobs.
Then he goes on, saying that they get paid "bleep."
"And here we go..." Lou says, watching.
Tommy tells the reporter to back off. She asks about alcohol and drug abuse, allegations of racism. Tommy cites the minority members of their crew and says firefighters don't go into a building and ask where the white people are. He gets angry and starts cussing.
"Nobody gives a f--- what color people are, as long as they're made out of steel," he rants.
He complains that he's tired of them being talked about like they're glorified garbage men. He keeps swearing, cusses her out, takes off his microphone and storms off, flipping the camera off on the way.
"So it seems the pain of 9/11 still runs deep," she says, closing her report, adding that firefighters like Tommy aren't taking advantage of the department's counseling.
When it's over, Franco is instantly mad at Tommy for making them all look bad. Then he turns on Needles, asking him why he wasn't able to talk the reporter out of using that footage like he promised.
Franco swears at Needles and Needles charges him. The guys intervene.
Everybody's phone rings.
Needles yells at Franco, calling him "pretty boy" and telling him his stuff ends now. Needles leaves and Franco is still mad as hell, telling Tommy it's his fault he just got in a fist fight with a commanding officer. He promises that footage will go viral.
Tommy asks what he's worried about. Franco lists Tommy's resume, drinking, sleeping with Sheila. Tommy asks if he's worried they'll find out he was spouting 9/11 conspiracy theories, or, Tommy says, that he tried to sleep with his wife.
Then Franco rushes Tommy and they have to be broken up.
Franco tells Lou that if he was in charge he'd do a better job keeping Tommy in line.
Later, Lou reads a cookbook, telling Tommy he's preparing for his second career in case he needs one.
Janet and Sheila both call Tommy, on his side and piling on the reporter. Sheila says at least people will remember Jimmy. Janet has a long list of grocery items they need. Kelly calls and he switches over.
Kelly hasn't heard about her test results yet. She tells him to call her later.
Lou hears him on the phone with her. Tommy says it's not what he thinks. Lou tells Tommy he's better off just sleeping with her and avoiding an emotional affair.
Mike and Shawn put down a deposit for a wedding space. Mike assures him it's great. Colleen arrives with Teddy and loves it immediately. They discuss music. Shawn wants a DJ. Colleen and Mike were thinking string quartet. Teddy insists there be bagpipers to play "Here comes the Bride," a Gavin tradition.
The woman who owns the space hears they're Irish and immediately tells them to get out. "This place means too much to me to have another McGuire Incident," she says.
Teddy actually knows what she's referring to. He says they make the Gavins look Irish. He apologizes to the woman and gives her another $400 to keep, for "reparations."
Sean finishes up his date with the dress shop woman, Emily. They agree the date went well. He kisses her good night and puts her in a cab, promising to call her. Instead, she drags him into the cab and gives the driver her address.
Cut to them in bed. The date is still going well.
When they're finished, Sean cuddles up to her but smells something foul. He looks around and sees her small dog.
Kelly calls Tommy. She tells him her news was good and she's done with treatment. She asks him to come over, and to bring milk, butter and eggs. Somehow he's found another woman who needs groceries.
Sean meets Mike in a bar. Sean tells him he had the best date ever with her and then the best sex of his life. But then after he smelled a stench so foul it was like a "sewer in a bad neighborhood where people only eat Indian food."
Sean says it wasn't him. "I have never in my life farted the smell of a rotten corpse," he says.
Mike asks if she has a dog.
Sean says the dog was tiny, but Mike thinks they may have just traumatized it with their sexual activity.
Tommy arrives at Kelly, with groceries.
She's making pot brownies as a thank you for the friend who let her stay in the apartment. Tommy shows her the flowers he brought.
Tommy tells her he's overwhelmed with estrogen and that his daughter is getting married. He's creeped out that she's having sex with someone he works with, but Kelly assures him that'll stop soon after they get married. He's oddly comforted.
Kelly goes to check on her brownies and finds she's burned them. She freaks out, throwing plates and breaking glasses. Tommy doesn't know what to do, but she yells at him that it's not about the brownies.
Her doctor told her she won, but she doesn't feel like she won anything. She keeps throwing stuff and then yells that she's sorry.
She regroups, explaining that she went through everything and doesn't know where to go next. She lays on the floor and tells Tommy she wishes she had a real boyfriend to do this with.
He helps her up and hugs her
He tells her as she was ranting, he was thinking about "her eyes and her ass." He kisses her.
He asks if she feels better. She says somewhat, but asks him if he thinks his kisses work magic.
She surveys the damage and says it helped her focus. In 10 years, she doesn't want to be Tommy. She tells him the booze and women don't matter, he should still just go home to his wife and kiss her the way he just kissed Kelly.
She asks him to leave.
Franco meets with Chief Feinberg in the city and tells him he wants to be a lieutenant. Feinberg says if Franco aces his test, he'll call downtown and make sure he's assigned to a top house in the city. He just tells him to keep his nose clean and mouth shut.
Sean and Emily have more mind-blowing sex. He rolls over to cuddle with her, but the smell comes back. Sean looks around for the dog, but she says he's at her sister's for the night. Sean buries his face in the pillow.
Later, in the SUV on the way to a scene, Needles diagnoses that Sean's dating a farter. When Sean tells him she's the most beautiful woman he's ever seen, Needles tells him to quit complaining.
At the fire, Shawn tells Mike the clovers on Colleen's dress were a nice touch. Tommy pushes ahead to knock down a door first. The other guys turn around as Tommy plows through.
He swings out over and empty space. There's nothing beyond the door but steep drop off, and a fire down below. The building ends.
Outside, Needles sends Shawn to look over a wall and he finds the building is only held up with bracing. He radios a mayday telling the guys to get out.
They try to shout to Franco, but he busts through a door on the other side of the shaft and ends up barely hanging on over the flaming chasm below. They get a ladder put it horizontally across the opening and Tommy climbs over the flames below to get Franco, who's struggling to hang on.
Tommy gets below Franco and holds onto him. He drops down to the ladder and they both crawl to safety.
Outside, Franco thanks Tommy. He shakes his hand, but tells Tommy it doesn't change anything about the other thing. Franco elaborates that he means how Needles, Lou and Tommy are crashing the crew into the ground.
